TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Your Health and It's Care Br DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Renders should addresi tnqutrlei toi Dr. William Brady. 2SS CI Camlno Beverly Hlili. Calli. LIES THAT My good friend John Bartlett, always at my side, though tat tered and torn, tells me that Sophocles got off this one: "A lie never lives to be old." Well that one has survived more than 2000 years. Almost daily. In the mail, some one ask how much salt peter to give Dr. Brady to curb, con trol or suppress sexual desire, or how it is administered in the army, the navy or various instt tutlons. There is no ground for the notion that salt peter (niter, potassium nitrate, nitrate of pot ash) has any such effect. It is not used and never has been used in the army, the navy, prisons or other institutions, as an anaphro disiac. What keeps this lie alive? A lie that still breathes feebly but has steadily waned in the last twenty years, is that of "marking" the unborn . baby This lie would die out in a short while, I believe, if school chil dren were given a fair deal in education. No one who has an elementary knowledge of embry. ology of the child's develop men before birth can take any stock in the old wives' tales of "marking". To worry about the possibility of "marking" the un born baby is to betray ignorance. Belief in or fear of "marking" is a surtax or penalty imposed upon prospective motherhood by our nineteenth century educa tional standard. This groundless fear not only Impairs the expectant mother's health and happiness as any mor bid worry does, but in a great many Instances interferes seri ously with those everyday activ ities which keep a woman fit for easy labor and early involu tion or return to normal. In my opinion remember, I'm Just a one-horse-and-buggy doctor be lief In and fear of "marking" the baby accounts for a great many eases of difficult and complicat ed childbirth and many more cases of sub-involution or delay ed return of pelvic organs to normal and consequent prolong ed disability. ' Another name for "marking" is "prenatal Impression." A woman is just as susceptible to shock from injury, fright or a repugnant spectacle when she Is with-chlld as at any other time. But she ought to know that how ever great her own suffering or injury may be, short of loss of life, her baby is virtually im mune and invulnerable.
