' Whether this difference has
any significance concerning the
susceptibility of children to in
fantile paralysis (poliomyelitis)
the Baltimore investigators did
not say. They simply published
their observations In the May
'49 Issue of The Journal of tha
American D n t a 1 Association:
and recommended "that a field
study be conducted in which all
the exposed pulps of one group
be eliminated several months be
fore the seasonal onset of the
disease (infantile paralysis),
while in a similar control group,
the incidence of pulpal expos
ures should be recorded, but no
dental treatment administered
Such a study, the investigators
suggested, would Indicate the
importance of pulpal exposure as
a portal of ontry for tho polio
myelitis virus.
It has been generally recog
nized by the medical profession
that a common portal of entry if
not the portal of entry of the
polio virus is the lining of the
upper respiratory act, by way
of the nerves of smell, some in
vestigators believe that, in some
eases the polio virus enters by
way of the gastro-lntestlnal tract,
being ingested In polluted wa
ter or milk or other food.j.
In another talk we'll deal
more in detail with the ways the
disease enters the system. Here
the question that should Interest
every parent or guardian of a
child is whether neglected teem
neglected baby teeth, that is to
say, make the child more likely
to catch infantile paralysis,
Well, you know my belief,
practice and teaching. NoT Well,
brushing one's teeth does no par
ticular harm, but the way to care
for your teeth is (1) by knowing
what constitutes good nutrition
and maintaining it, and (2) by
having one's teeth regularly in
spected and if necessary treated
by the dentist. That's all there
is to it, I believe.
To allow a child to have one
or several cavities for months or
years, without proper dental
treatment on the plea that It is
not worth while to have cavities

William Bond, who has been
foreman of Tucker's Flounce
Rock ranches for the past two
years, and Mrs. Bond, had open
house, May 27, and around 200
people called. Mr. and Mrs. Bond
are leaving this week end for
Madras, Oregon, where Mr. Bond
has accepted the foreman job on
the large Hay Creek ranch.
Friends of Mrs. George Jeros
met at the home of Mrs. Halvar
Haukli, May 25, to bid her fare
well. Cake and coffee was served
at close of the afternoon to the
guest of honor, Mrs. Jaros, and
Mrs. John Hakkerup, Mrs. Ray
mond Artmire, Mrs. Jack Edler,
Mrs. Fred Middlebusher, Mrs.
Louis South, Mrs. Heine Herta
ger, Mrs. Mike Vognild, Mrs.
Frank Salter, Mrs. Ernest Sink,
and Mrs. Haukli. Mr. Jaros,
grade school principal here for
the past year, has accepted a
similar position at Walla Walla,
and together with Mrs. Jaros and
three children, moved there the
first of this week.
Mrs. ' Clara Uhly returned
from Helena, Mont., May 26, ac
companied by Robert, Franklin,
Andrew, and Alberta Bahr, who
will make their home here with
their father, Otto Bahr. The
Bahr children have been staying
at a boarding school at Helena
since the death of their mother,
several years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Horn
buckle motored to Grants Pass,
May 26, and spent the week end
with Mr. and Mrs. Dale Griffen
and children. Mr.. Hornbuckle
returned here Sunday, while
Mrs. Hornbuckle and daughters
went on to Koseburg, to visit a
day, before going to Portland
and Camas, Wash., They were
accompanied north by Mrs.
Hornbuckle'g mother, Mrs. John
Herman of Roseburg.-

week for Camp Lee,- Va., to
spend a few weeks with her hus

Maurice E. Scheel, superinten
dent of Prospect schools for the
past two years, tendered his res
ignation to the school board this
week. He plans to attend Oregon
State college this summer, and
enroll in another college in the
fall.
Tracey Boothby, L. A. Dits-
worth, and David Neville were
chosen for the school budget
committee, this year, and met
with the school board, May 29,
to outline the budget.
Recent guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Haynes were the former's
brother-in-law and sister, Mr.
and Mrs. William Dickson of
