Medford 3 1- .750 Grants Pass 3 1 .750 Ashland 0 4 .000 Behind the four-hit pitching of Dick Fawcctt, the Medford Tornado baseball team defeated Ashland 5 to 0 here Friday after noon in the final game of the southern Oregon conference. The victory gave Medford a tie with Grants Pass for leadership of the league. Ashland ended up In last place, failing to win a conference game. J. C. Tucker, Medford coach, said there will be no play-off with Grants Pass. Fawcett was credited with 15 strikeouts while Reedy of Ash- land whiffed two. Mitchell, who relieved Reedy in the ninth in ning, also fanned two. Fawcett was in trouble only once, in the seventh inning when Ashland got two hits and a walk to load the bases with none on. The little Medford hurler handed the situation well by striking out the next three Grizzly batters. Fawcett and catcher Bob Wat son carried the biggest sticks for Medford, each getting three hits out of four trips to the platter, Two of Watsons blows were doubles. Medford collected 11 hits. Clingman is now in the restaur ant business in Eugene and re cently started a mat comeback in up-state circles. Speedy Mahoncy will make his first southern Oregon appear ance on the same bill. Llllard said. He likewise will face some good foe. Others who may see action on the three-star program are Kenny Ackles, the Holly wood wonder boy, "Gorgeous" George Wagner, Antone Leone and Paavo Katonen. CRATER BASEBALL E EO The Butte Falls-Medford Crat ers baseball game, scheduled for the Fairgrounds park this after noon, has been cancelled be cause oi wet grounds. Crater Manager Paul Freer said Sat urday. A game between Gold Hill and Central Point Studs, slated for Central Point this afternoon, al so has been cancelled. The Southern Oregon league is scheduled to start Sunday, June 3, with Medford tentatively booked to meet Central Point here. REPAIRS - - PHONE 4011 TIE WITH BROWNS New York, May 26 (U.R) The New York Yankees whipped the White Sox today, 13 to 0, put ting down for the time being the pennant pretensions of the Chi cagoans and setting up Sun day's Yank-St. Louis Brown doublcheader as a fight for the American league lead. It was the fourth straight loss for the Chlcagoans at the hands of the Yanks, and dropped them from second to third place. The Yanks waded through the vaunt ed White Sox hurling staff with little regard for their records, and today "thumped" their ace, Thornton Lee. Lee gave up six runs before being lifted in the sixth, and Johnson and Touch stone had no better luck in muf fling New York bats. The Browns kept pace with New York by defeating the Bos ton Red Sox, 0 to 2. Detroit edged the Philadelphia Athletics, 5 to 4. Eddie Mayo made four hits to lead the Tigers, and his seventh-inning double, followed by Cullenbine's single, proved to be the winning run. Rain washed out the Cleveland-Washington game. In the National league, the New York Giants- kept well ahead of the pack by thumping Cincinnati again, S to 1. Paul Erickson made his 1945 debut for the Chicago Cubs a winning one, a four-hit 2 to 1 de cision over the Philadelphia Phillies. Bill Lee gave the Cubs only five hits, but his contrel failed in the ninth inning and he gave up a single and then walk ed three straight batters, forcing in the winning run. - Rain stopped the Pittsburgh Boston game in the third inning with the score 6 to 1 in favor of Pittsburgh. While 5,000 cadets and offi cers roared approval. Dick Kin ney, Laconia, N. H., right hand er, struck out eight Middie bat ters and was in complete com mand of the game throughout. Except for teammate Josey's fielding lapse in the fifth, Kin ney might have had a shutout as both Navy runs were scored on a bad throw with two men aboard. It was Army's 14th straight victory of the season and they now lead the Navy 23 to 15 in the scries which began in 1901. TITLE TO Champaign, 111., May 26 (U.R) The brilliant performances of three "cripples," and the sur prise running of a Negro fresh man, George Walker, and a hot sun enabled Illinois to upset Michigan's defending champions today and win its first Big Ten track and field championship Since 1934. Illinois scored BS'.i points; Michigan, seeking Its third con secutive title, finishing second with 56 16 and Minnesota came in third with 27',i points. Illinois, with three of its cham pions nursing injuries, was counted out of the running in pre-meet speculation and Michi gan was practically conceded the title. W Glenn H. if' UTZ MEN'S WEAR NOVA GOMES OFF CANVAS TO BEAT Boston, May 26 (U.R) Lou Nova, 205, Van Nuys, Cel., came off the canvas tonight to knock out Johnny Denson, 197V4, In dianapolis in the sixth round of their scheduled 10-round bout at Mechanics' building before 1, 593 fans. Nova was down for a nine count in the first round after Denson scored with a straight righthand punch to the jaw. Nova's knees buckled as he rose and he fell back on the ropes while Denson desperately tried to knock him out. The bell, however, sounded the end of the round. For the next five rounds, It was clearly Nova's fight as he battered Denson back and forth across the ring and was only slightly bothered by the Hoosier heavyweights left jab. The treble damage suit also asked that the hotel corporation be enjoined from further viola tions. Robert L. Moore, chief OPA rent enforcement attorney, said the suit was the largest the OPA has filed against a landlord in this area. The suit charged the hotel col lected $10,864.60 in over-ceiling rents between July 1 and Dec. 31, 1944 and failed to offer a proper proportion of its rooms for weekly and monthly occu pancy.
