Eaves fanned 13 and even had the umpires mystified. They suspected that he was throwing the outlawed spitter but failed to detect any signs to this effect despite repeated examinations of the horsehide. The Padres tallied the win ning run in the fourth inning on Lou Vezelich's single, Outfielder Norm Deweese's miscue and a solid basehit by Del Ballinger. Len Gllmore, ace of the Oakland staff, was the losing hurler. I IN PLAYER DEAL St. Louis, Mo., May .24 (U.R) Rebellious Morton Cooper, key man in one of baseball's greatest dynasties, left a tottering world championship St Louis Cardinal team behind him today to' seek his fortune with the perennial laggards of Boston the Braves. The big fellow, who walked out on the team he had led to three straight National league pennants, passed up a chance at a world series cut in a long and involved wrangle over a $1,500 a year pay raise, moving in with a team that hasn't won a pen nant since 1914 and hasn't been in the first division since 1934. Barrett Wayfarer Whether the trading of Coop er to Boston for nondescript Pitcher Barrett and a reported $100,000 in cash signaled the break-up of the three-time Na tional league pennant winners remained to be seen. Barrett, an off-and-on National league way farer since 1937, never has won more than 12 games in a season and usually has lost more games than he has won. Consistent Winner Cooper, on the other hand, has been the National league's most consistent winner for three straight seasons, during which he won 22, 21, and 22 games respec tively. In 1942 and 1943 he led in the number of victories and in 1942 when he was named the most valuable player, he had the top earned run average of 1.77, The deal was completed yes terday at a conference between Owner Sam Breadon of the Car dinals, his manager, Billy South worth, John J. Qulnn, business manager of the Braves, and Louis Perini, head of the Boston club. Quinn said Barrett would leave for St. Louis without delay while Cooper was expected to join his new team mates on their road trip at Pittsburgh today or tomorrow. New York, May 24 U.R) As far as Rookie Pitcher Dave Fer riss is concerned, opposing bat ters are like so many names in a telephone directory, which is as good a reason as any today for his amazing success with the Boston Red Sox. The 23-year-old kid, apparent ly bent on beating every club in the league on his first time out, is d little let down when , he doesn't score a shut-out. He has beaten five different teams In as many games and has scored three shut-outs, allowing only three runs in 45 innings and just 30 hits for an average of six per game. Hurler Disappointed Beating the Champion St. Louis Browns, 4 to 1, at Boston yesterday was no ordinary achievement, but Ferriss ex pressed disappointment at the finish because he didn't blank them. The Yankees humbled the league leading Chicago White Sox, 5 to 3, at New York, mak ing all their runs in the first in ning to give Floyd Bevens in sec ond win on a seven-hitter.. Detroit defeated the Athletics at Philadelphia, 7 to 1, regain ing sole possession of second place from the Browns. Senators Los. ' Cleveland topped the Senators at tVashington, 3 to 2, in a night game. In the National league Van Llngle Mungo pitched one of the best games in his long career, giving the New York Giants a 2 to 0 shutout at Cincinnati. The Pittsburgh Pirates won a loosely played game In the 13th from the Boston Braves, 9 to 8, at Pittsburgh. Rookie Jack Creel made a suc cessful Major league debut for the Cards at St. Louis, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers 11 to 1. Claude Passeau of the Cubs gave his ailing arm a successful workout against the Philadel phia Phillies at Chicago, winning 5 to 3. L FOR 'BIG 3' MEET Washington, May 24. U.R The White House said today that a big three meeting is "definite ly in the works." Presidential Press Secretary Charles G. Ross emphasized that the London and Moscow diplo matic missions of Joseph E Davies and Harry L. Hopkins, announced by Mr. Truman yes terday, do not in any way take the place of the projected big three meeting. Both President Truman and Prime Minister Winston Church' 111 recently have expressed de sire for a meeting with Premier Josef Stalin, but Ross' statement was the first official revelation that plans for such a conference were in the works. Hopkins, for years the late President Roosevelt s most inti mate ad,viser, and Davies, former U. S. ambassador to Russia will undertake their missions as "part of the general pattern of the coming big three confer ence", Ross said. This apparently means that they will lay the groundwork for the Stalin Truman - Churchill meeting on the subject of which only Stalin thus far has remain ed silent. Hopkins left for Russia yester day morning with Ambassador W. Averell Harriman. Davies left for London during the night. Thursday.
