MAY CANCEL SHIPSHAW DEAL Washington, May 17 U.R) Recommendation by the War Production Board lor cancella tion of more than half of the S...,. haw aluminum contract with Canada indicated today that negotiations may be started soon to end the entire deal. The WPB yesterday asked the Metals R -serve Corporation to cancel the optional portion of the 250,000,000 pound aluminum contract leaving only 100,000,000 pounds that this country is still obligated to buy from the aiumi num company of Canada. The remaining portion of the order is subject 'to cancellation only by negotiation. Sen. Guy Cordon, R., Ore., said today he was "hopeful" the WPB would act favorably on the recommendation of the senate small business committee that tl. necessary negotiations be un dcrtake.. to release the United ' States entirely from the contract. The Shlpshaw contract, 're newed to the extent of 250,000,- 000 pou..is for 1949 last March, has bean under Investigation by the senate group which seeks to learn why a foreign contract for aluminum was made at a time domestic plans were being closed down. The committee also Is seeking to learn why the government originally financed vast expan sion of the Canadian Aluminum company's Shlpshaw facilities for production of aluminum when it contends, northwest fa cilities were adequate to meet U. S. demands. Interior Secretary Harold L. Ickes told the committee on Monday that the "deal was a mis take In Judgment from the be ginning to end." Tacoma Jarred By Powder Mill Blast Tacoma, Wash., May 17 m.R) One man was killed In an earthshaking blast that demol ished the glaze mill In the black powder plant of the E. I. DuPont company, IS miles south of Ta coma Wednesday. Archie B. Fleming, 02, Tacoma foreman of the plant, was killed In the explosion. There were no other casualties, Chief Clerk V. V. Decker said. Eugene Synagogue Not On Campus of Oregon University Eugene, Ore., May 17 (U.R)- Nathan Rubenstein, member of the congregation of the Beth Israel temple in Eugene, today emphoslzed that the synagogue was not connected In any way with the University of Oregon, as stated erroneously in reports yesterday of the synagogue s des- ecretlon by vandals. Rubenstein said, "It has come to my attention that certain newspaper and radio accounts of the desecration of the Jewish synagogue in Eugene stated that the synagogue was located on the University of Oregon cam pus. This is entirely untrue. Our synagogue, Temple Bethel Israel is located at 231 West Eighth avenue, which Is some 14 blocks across town from the university campus, and has no connection whatsoever with the University of Oregon. Milkman Charged With Beating Old Mother To Death Los Angeles, May 17 (U.PJ Charles Endner, 41 year old milkman, today awaited prelim inary hearing May 22 on charges he beat his 84 year old mother to death.
