Washington, May 3 U.R) Acting Secretary of State Joseph C. Grew today unveiled the hour- to-hour story of Heinrich Himm ler's unsuccessful attempt to sur render Germany to the United States and Great Britain. Grew revealed that Himmler was told yesterday by Swedish Count Folke Bernadotte, after the Count had returned to Stock holm, that President tTruman would accept Germany's uncon ditional surrender only if It were made "to the three Allied gov ernments on all fronts" rather than Just to the two western Al lies. Receives No Reply The American Legation In Stockholm said Bernadotte re ported yesterday that he had de livered the president's message 'but had received no reply' li'om the Germans. Grew's chronological account of the Nazi Gestapo chief s sur render offer began with a dis closure that British and Amer ican representatives were called to the Swedish Foreign Minister April 24 at 11 p. m., Swedish time (5 p. m., EWT) and advised of Himmler a offer. At three a. m. Swedish time the next day, American Minister Herschel V. Johnson reported tlie negotiations to the State De partment. Himmler In Charge Grew said his message relayed these facts: "Count Bernadotte met Himm ler at Lubeck at 1 o'clock the morning of April 24 at Hlmm ler's request. Himmler said Hit ler was so HI he might already be dead and could not live more than two days. (Gen. Schullen- burg, Hlmmler's confidential staff officer, said . Hitler was suffering from brain hemmorh- age), and that he, Himmler, was therefore in a position of full authority. "Himmler asked the Swedish government to arrange for .him to meet (Gen. Dwlght D.) Elsen hower In order to arrange to ca pitulate on the whole western front (Including Holland). "Bernadotte asked If Norway and Denmark were Included ln the capitulation. Himmler agreed to order his troops In Norway and Denmark to surrender to American, British . or Swedish troops. Russians Excluded "Himmler said he hoped to be able to continue to fight on the eastern front and stipulated that his offer was for the western Allies only." On the same day, April 25, President Truman hurried to the Pentagon for a meeting with the Joint chiefs of staff and Grew and Immediately contacted Prima Minister Winston Church 111 to "agree upon messages" which would advise Premier Josef Stalin of the Himmler otter. Grew said the president sent his message to Stalin, "summar ising the Himmler offer and stat ing that the British and Amer ican governments proposed to re ject it." The nresldmt added that Brit ain and the United States would "inform Himmler that uncondi tional surrender to the govern ments of the United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union is the only acceptable offer. , Stalin Agrees At noon the following day, the Charge d' Affaires of the Russian Embassy here, Nikolai Novikof, called on Grew with Stalin's re ply "thanking th president for the lnlormation and agreeing to the proposed message" to be re layed to Himmler via Stockholm. Grew took Stalin's reply to President Truman and one hour later at 1 p. m April 28 the president cabled the American Legation In Stocknulm, advising the American Minister that the only acccptuble terms would be unconditional surrender to the Big Three "on all fronts." It pointed out that If the Ger mans wanted to surrender on these terms, the German forces should surrender to local com manders in the field. It added that where resistance continues "the Allied armies will conunur to press the attack." TO CLOSE MAY 15 May IS has been announced as the closing date of the annual drive for cancer control funds by the American Cancer society, a telegram received today by Mrs. John Day, county chairman, stated. Originally scheduled to close May 9, the drive has been extended due to the fact that it was later in starting than had been anticipated according to David Simpson, Portland state chairman. Mrs. Day repeated the fact that contributions for the control of cancer, which is responsible for the death of one out of every eight Americans, may be left at either of the Medford banks, at the Chamber of Commerce, mail ed to her address, Groveland ave- e, or put into a stamped en velope addressed Cancer and put into the mails, E Roosevelt School Gets Health Honor Roll Trophy Award As a result of physical exam ination of Medford grade school students climaxing National Child Health Day, Roosevelt school was awarded the Health Honor Roll trophy Tuesday after 82.8 per cent of the pupils quali fied for the roll. Members of the roll are students who have no serious remedial defects or have had defects corrected. Jackson school was second with 78.3 per cent. The "health Inspection", or daily health duties award, was won by Lincoln school with 89.6 ner cent of the pupils passing Roosevelt school was awarded second place with 99 plus per cent. Tenants Advised To Get Receipts Tenants who wish to protest rent overcharges should show their receipts or equally satis factory evidence of the amount of payment, E. B. McCutchan, rent attorney for this rent area ad vised today. "Tenants are often not aware of the fact that landlords are re quired under federal rent regu lations to give a receipt showing the amount of rent paid, the pe riod covered and the living ac commodations to which it ap plies," McCutchan explained. He said that without a receipt it is sometimes Impossible to estab lish the. amount of a cash pay ment and the area rent office In that event is unable to obtain a refund for the tenant. 12 CHICKENPOX CASES REPORTED FOR WEEK Twelve cases of chickenpox. reported for various parts of the county, top this week's list of communicable diseases reported to the county health officer last week. The cases were reported from Ashland, Prospect, Talent, Phoenix and Medford. Also listed were two cases of scarlet fever In Prospect and Medford, three cases of measles, two in Medford and ono in Ash land and one in Jacksonville. JUSTICE TO STAY Washington, Mav 3. Applications for the canning sugar, Form R341, will be avail able at grocery sores covered by the Medford board within the next several days, it was stated, and housewives are to obtain the blanks from their grocers or from the ration board office. Issuance of coupons will - start here about May 15. The following steps are to be observed in obtaining the sugar: Obtain one application per fam ily from grocer or board, fill out form completely, attach spare stamp 13 from war ration book IV for each member of the fam ily covered in the application, submit the form to -the local OPA, either in person or by mail. Be sure to apply for sugar well in advance of the time it is needed since each application will be studied by a panel organ ized for this purpose and imme diate action will not be possible. If any part of the form- Is. not filled out, it will be returned to the applicant. ... ... After the application is ap proved, horns canning . coupons will be mailed to the applicant. The coupons will be one-pound (R-330) and five-pound (K-342) denominations. The five-pound coupons must be endorsed by the applicant or any member of his family unit listed on the ap plication before they can be spent and the serial number of the endorsers' ration book four must also be placed on the cou pons. Expiration, late- for five pound coupons is November 10, 1945. Under - the latest order, 15 poifnds of canning sugar per per son will be available, -or 120 pounds to a single family, even when the family exceeds eight persons. Of the 15-pound ration per person, the housewife may use up to five pounds for can ning vegetables or making jams, jellies, relishes, catsup, etc. 21 ENEMY SHIPS Washington, May 3.
