BIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Your Health and It's Care By DR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. Header! should addresi Inquiries toi Dr William Brady. 265 ci Camino. Bararly Hills. Calif. NO CLASS IN GERIATRICS TODAY A correspondent submitting gome fundamental questions .,., iiihAti. said he is one of anumoerui nersons with diabetes who attend a regu lar class to hear the physi- clan (who lim its his practice to this field) tell how one with diabetes should live. Something od vlously wrong . Dr. Brady either with the doctor's teaching or with the.cor Tespondent's pride; that is, the doctor fails to translate his lec ' ture Into language the layman can understand, or the corre spondent is too proud to ask for an explanation. Well, anyway, the tenor of the correspondent's query reminded me once again of the confusion of tongues that causes so much misunderstanding between the medical profession and the pub lic. iSfe been working at It for a long time and by now I should be a fairly good interpreter of ' medical parlance for the man in the street. But almost every day letters from readers make me painfully aware of my incompe tence as a teacher. So there will be no class in geriatrics today, children1. Geri atrics that's the branch or specialty of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment ol nf the mature or ciuun; Pediatrics, as many know, is the branch or specialty of medicine devoted to tne ainsniraia - nt Hissanea of children. A physician whose practice is limited to me aiw f -.,i,.ian or nediatrist. So a physi cian who limits his practice to innr u ceriairisi or k- iatrician but we are getting for ahead 01 progress neic for as yet, so far as I know, not nne nhvslclan nas naa mo ... n hnirl himself out as a prao .itinor nf geriatrics exclusively a striking contrast with the nllHno- herds of amDltlous youiiK doctors who enter practice as zuU-xledgea cnua Diicuiaiw and verv often, actually get away with it, that Is, so far as tnakinff sn easv uvina bum, But don't go away, folks. It should not disappoint you to find this is not clinic, not if you kn.ia umsid tnii column veiy long. Always we accentuate the nrnnhv HS I. ITUDnVlHCllU thing that prevents or contrib- t. in the nrevention oi oucuac Although we leave geriatrics to k nhvelplana. II is stilt me auu, and 1 think the proper province of this department, to noia mese conversations on gerontology with all who care to Join our class. Gerontology is the study r .Hence of the ohvsllogicai ana patholigaal changes Incident to mature age. Here we are concerned primar ily with hygiene, nutrition, phy siology, prophylaxis or preven tion of degeneration and disease, and It makes no difference how many years you have been knocking about or how many years you may have still to go, it is never too early and never too late for you to learn something about these aspects of gerontol ogy. So don't go away disap pointed. If you came for the geri atrics class. Draw up will and ait down. Pretend you are Just mused at these old codgers here and Just listen. What you'll hear will at least do you no harm. - QUISTIONS ANSWERS Eye color Is It possible for man and wife having eyes of the same color to have a child born to them with eyea of a different colort (Mrs. M.
