WITH MOSS O & . . ... . The oralticing demist wno sent me the best criticism have received from a dentist in iM0BjVBSBBMsxveB regard in iuc v V ;f.xli teachings in; 'iaVi this column r -vSi$'j dismisses the regard to the vite (my term) or tooth brush ing with a few words: ''.A-K." Or. Brady "You are quite right that brushing never stopped any decay. But using the brush makes people think of teeth, and of dentist, and so we have half a chance to get hold of them once in a while before too much dam age is done. And once in a While I can inveigle a patient into mas saging the gums with the brush, which helps quite a bit in low grade chronic gingivitis" (gum inflammation) where the pa tient will eat what he dam' pleases regardless. So it is not wasted. And of course, it does freshen tip the mouth a bit, which helps some to brighten the day ... . - Well, I'd rather freshen up my mouth a bit by chewing a mouth ful of wheat,' or by eating an apple, or eating some raw tur nip, carrot, cabbage, celery, let tuce. This dentist is evidently ten years ahead of the rank and file of the dental profession in his practical application of newer scientific knowledge. He tells me a good deal about the practi cal way to insure the correct calcium-phosphtrus ration in the everyday diet. He even tells me just where his patients can get teal whole wheat bread (don't ask me where, folks, I don't know). There may be some advantage to be gained by massaging the gums in one way or another. I can see no objection to it in any circumstances. I merely recall attention to the observation of Dr. Weston A. Price (nutrition and Physical Degeneration, now out of print, but a newly revised edition soon to be issued) in many parts of- the world, among civilized and uncivilized people, that the people having the finest teeth never use a toothbrush at all. And the study of the condi tion of the teeth of the inhabi tants of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic by British den tists (National Geographic Mag azine, November, '38) revealed astonishingly good teeth in both young and old, though the peo ple never used toothbrushes.
