TWO MEDFORD MAIL Til IB Majors Start Play Today Without Big-Name Stars New York, April 17 (U.R) Most of the "stars" are gone from Major League baseball's banner, but It wilt be hoisted nonetheless proudly today for the opening of the fourth straight war-time season. The "stars" are away playing a greater and grimmer game and the kids, the 4-F's and the oldsters left to carry on won't produce a brand of Major League baseball to compare with hap pier peace-time years. ; But It will be baseball Just the same, even with the "stars on service floes instead of on the diamond. Thousands of fans still will make their annual trek to the parks for the official start of the great American pasiime. Never before has baseball been at such a low ebb for man power, yet paradoxically never before were hopes any higher for a successful season. The Majors open their season with the mandate of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt to carry on. It Is no secret that the executives of the game wou'd have called It "quits" for the duration without his provisional "green light." The renewal today will be the 69th for the National League, which beean ooerat!ons In Wti and the 44th for the American which has been going since 1901 Close races were forecast for both circuits. The two St. Louis clubs, whose ofi-season man power losses were less serious than elsewhere, are expected to repeat for the resoectlve cham pionships, but neither can af ford to falter.
