Cachet to Mark East-West Hop A cachet to commemorate the first direct east-west flight by United Air Lines between New England and the Pacific coast will be serviced by the Boston and Hartford offices of United Air Lines, according to John J Hart, United's manager of postal service. The Inaugural flight has been et for May 1. Workmen have completed remodeling the Friends church here and work of painting the furniture and ex terior Is scheduled. ' The structure, built In 1871 and used as a Baptist church for many years, had fallen into dis repair. Improvements stnrted 10 months ago, Include rebuilding chimneys, leveling foundation, adding porch and vestibule, re wiring, installing new heater, pulpit rail, Sunday school screens and tables, lowering ceil ing and finishing ceiling and walla with Celotex. VIOITAtLI COMPOUND Camp White Saves On Coal Bill by Salvaging Wood Camp Whiter Salvaged wood for fuel has been used so sue cessfully at this post that it has resulted in coal savings of over 63 per cent during the first 10 days of April, it was announced by the office of the post en gineer. During that time 191 tons of wood, equivalent to 111 tons of coal, were burned In barracks, offices, warehouses and mess halls, necessitating the use of only 57 tons of coal. All wood was salvaged from the reserva tion. Equivalent savings have been made since January when Col. John R. Young, post commander, nut Into effect at this camp a conservation program to help overcome the 22,000,000-ton na tionwide coal deficit. GOLD HILL SOLDIER ON . DUTY IN FRANCE Gold Hill, April 16 First Sgt. Joseph L. Shoemaker Is now in France with the 1024th Engi neers. He writes that the weath er is somewhat like that of Ore gon. He has served 12 years in the army. Pfc. Edward Shoemaker and wife were to arrive in Gold Hill Sunday for a short visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Shoemaker. Mrs. Melvin Davis left April 12 for Oakland, Ore., for a short visit. GERMANS DISORGANIZED London, April 16. SEI FOR ASHLAND Annual spring conventionette of Crater Lake Christian En deavor Union, embracing all at filiated Christian youth groups in Jackson and Josephine coun ties, will be held at the Ashland Christian church April 20, ac cording to Lowell Hall, president of the organization. Among special leaders of the sessions will be Vernon L. Fish back, Portland, executive secre tary of the state union. Local leaders will be the Rev. Earl Downing, host pastor; the Rev. Delbert Daniels of the Medford First Christian church, who will deliver the convention address at 8 p. m. on the theme: "Christ Calls"; Miss Joyce Fraley, sec retary; Miss Jean Lydiard, presi dent of the local Presbyterian young people and a member of the program committee; the Rev. and Mrs. Gilbert Cays, of the Central Point Church of Christ; the Rev. Milo C. Ross of the Friends church, Medford; Ever ett McGee, Ashland; the Rev Gordon Hypes of Grants Pass, and the. Rev. Harry Hansen, Med ford Presbyterian pastor. Sessions begin at 2 p. m. Fri day, and the afternoon will be given over to a series of six study groups and conferences, of which the delegates may choose a possible three. "How to Study the Bible," "Prayer Meetings and Devotional Life," "Social Committee Work," "Extending the Societies," "Youth Problem Discussion," "Union Work" are subjects to be discussed. Later In the afternoon there will be a period of recreation, led by the Ashland youth. The annual banquet at 6:30 will be a no-cost carry-in affair In which the host church ladies will provide the service, cover ed dishes, and drinks, the dele gates bringing salads and des serts. Jim Fraley of Medford will act as toastmaster. Closing service will convene at 8 p. m., with special musical numbers an incidental features, a talk by Secretary Fishback, and address by the Rev, Mr. Dan iels. 1 All youth of the valley are invited to attend the convention, which is Interdenominational in character, and the work of which can be adapted to the needs and service of any Chris tian group.
