It is stated that a much more widespread cam' paign is planned than ever be fore for ell parts of the nation. Mrs. Day states that donations to carry on tne cancer coniroi work may be taken tp either ol the Medford banks, may be sent to her or may be put Into an en velope and addressed merely "Cancer Control Drive" and put into the mail, special arrange ments having been made for the delivery of such contributions. Cpl. Walter Dye Listed Wounded, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Dye, Route 3, box 420, have received word of the serious wounding March 25, of their son, Cpl. Walter Lee Dye, in action in Germany. Cpl Dye has been removed to a hos pital in Paris, the parents have been informed, but no further details have been received. Cpl. Dye has been in the army two years and overseas one year. Born in Ontario, Canada, she had spent the past 37 years In Medford. Surviving ere two brothers, Alex and Robert Case- man, Canada, and several nieces and nephews. She had been an active mem ber of the Christian Science Church since 1908. Christian Science services will be read in the Conger-Morris Chapel at 10:30 a. m., Wednesday, with In tcrment in Siskiyou Memorial Park. WILLIAM M. HOWARD Funeral services for William M. Howard, who passed away In a local hospital Friday, will be held In the Conger-Morris Chap el at 1:30 p. m., Monday, with the Hev. D. E. Millard omciat-ing. Interment will be in l.o.u.r. cemetery.. He was born In Morgan coun ty, Kentucky, on April 15, 1860 He came to Southern Oregon from Missouri by covered wagon n 1883. Five years later he was united in marriage to Jennie Johnson, who survives. The en tire 62 years that he lived here were spent close to Thomas Koaa and Stewart Avenue. Surviving, besides his wife. Is a son, Roy L. Howard, Medford, and two grandchildren. The citation, issued March 16 read: "Major Wright A. Scoville. Field Artillery. United States army, for meritorious service in connection with military opera tions against the enemy from 12, January, 1945 to 8, March, 1945 in Germany. By means of a new and simple check police hope to locate the most dangerous brakes in use and to warn . motorists of the urgency of getting their brakes adjusted or repaired. The check will be applied only to passenger cars involved in traffic viola tions, where the car is moving, and in accidents. Brakes will also be checked on cars which ere operated in a manner Indi cating the brakes are unsafe. Wood Block Used "The brake check takes only a minue to make", according to Chief McCredie. "In making the check, the officer will place a wood block one inch thick on the floor board under the foot pedal. He then depresses the pedel. If it strikes the block be fore the brakes begin to grip the brakes will be considered In adequate and in need of imme diate attention. If the brakes grip while the pedal is slightly more than one inch from the floor board they are not to be considered safe and the driver will be urged to have corrective measures taken, McCredie said "The brake check is deter mined after careful research. and it is based on the pedal pressure needed to stop cars safely. The average car requires about 130 pounds of pedal pres sure to permit brakes to do the' best job of stopping the car. with only one inch of effective distance left in applying the brakes, it is possible to build up only about 50 pounds of pedal pressure which is far less than is needed for proper stopping. Not Blanket Check "This brake check does not blanket all motorists. It applies only' to conditions cited above. However, motorists in general, for their own protection and safety and to conserve their owa cars are urged to cooperate. II motorists have any doubt as to the safety of their brakes, they should have them tested imme diately and have them adjusted and repaired as soon as pos sible," said Chief McCredie.
