I BE SITE FOR BIG U. S. CEMETERY Klamath Falls, April 11Lo eation of a national cemetery in the vicinity of the new Klamath Falla cemetery west of town near Klamath river wag suggest ed locally today as further infor mation came from Washington on the proposed project. The city council is having plats prepared showing avail able ground in the area in which the new city memorial park is being established. To Cut Travel An Associated Press story from Washington said that two cemeteries are recommended for Oregon by the quartermaster corps in an effort to minimize the distance traveled by fam ilies and friends of those eligible to burial in the federal plots. Estimating that the bodies of 26,201 victims of World War II will be brought from their temporary resting places over seas, and that 20,960 grave sites will be needed for widows and wives of veterans, the QMC pre pared for 75,000 grave sites. Center Nsar Portland The location of the larger cemetery (50,000) at Portland established the transportation maximum at 100 miles for the majority of the veteran popula tion. "A the center of popula tion of the state is located about 65 miles inland from the (Pacif ic) coast and about 30 miles south of Portland." Says the report: "Portland, as the largest city in the state and therefore a na tural point of interest, is an ideal location for a national cemetery, being situated in a country of great natural beauty It Is also the center of very large Industries, such as lumber and wool. It is the most import ant railroad and highway junc tion in the state." Klamath Falls was designated for the other cemetery because it is the largest city in southern Oregon and is a county seat. G, Shearburn at the regular meet ing of Lincoln School Parent- Teacher association Friday April 13, at 2:30 p. m., at the school. Leverette Interstate Theaters. Mottner was employed by the George A. Hunt Theaters, Inc., as a doorman and was in charge of theater bond sales. On Feb. 1, 1943, he went to the Holly Theater as manager, also doing some of the advertising and was later transferred to the Rialto. Mead, manager of the Midway Auction company, as auctioneer at the company yards, Mead announced today. Bray, who has already started work with the company, is a trained auctioneer and has been holding successful sales In the Yreka vicinity and also In the large sale yards in the Sacramento valley, Mead reports. The company manager states that he has installed a public address system at the yards and plans other changes and im provements which he believes will be for the convenience of both buyers and consignors. He stated that Bray would devote his entire time to business In connection with the yards. Mr. and Mrs. Bray will take up residence in the valley as soon as a home can be secured. Strike Threatens Huge Meat Store Ottumwa, la., April 11 (U.R) G. M. Foster, president of John Morrell and company, said to day that "several million pounds of meat" may spoil because strik ing workers won't permit ship ments to leave the plant, Members of the United Pack ing Workers (C. I. O.) went on strike six days ago in a con troversy involving seniority ifl the transfe rof men from one department to another. Three thousand workers are involved. GIDEONS TO CONDUCT MID-WEEK MEETING The Gideons, Christian busi ness men's organization, will have representatives present to conduct the service at the mid week meeting of the Friends Church, Thursday at 8 p. m., ac cording to Milo Clifton Ross, local pastor. The meeting will be held in the new parsonage, Old Paclfle highway at Da Barr ave nue. - The Gideons have given a great deal of time and money recently in supplying men of the armed forces with Bibles and other Christian literature. An other of their services of late Is in providing schools with the Scriptures to be used In week day religious education classes. Long-Time Friends Of County Meet in Hawaiian Islands Two navy men, Bill Bostwick of Jacksonville and George Bar ber of Medford, close friends for many years, met recently by coincidence in the Hawaiian is lands for the first time in more than a year. Barber, R2c, wrote his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. Bar ber, 616 McAndrews road, that he and Bostwick spent a day sightseeing around the Islands. The two men were friends while attending school in the county and later both worked In Portland shipyards before enter ing the navy. Barber has a broth er, Bill, carpenter's mate in the Seabees, who has been stationed on the Marianas for the past two years. His wife and two children reside at 45 Rose avenue. Gold Hill Play to Defy Jinx of Date Gold Hill, April 11 (U.R) The Gold Hill juniors and sen iors will defy the Friday, the 13th jinx date to. present their play, "Mistakes of the BlaKes," a three-act comedy. The curtain will go up at 8 p. m. and the band directed by Stephen Whip ple will furnish music. Baruch Is Guest Of Lt. Gen. Patton With U. S. 3d Army, Ger many, April 11 (U.R) Bernard Baruch visited 3d army head quarters today as the guest of Lt, General George S. Patton. He said he expected to visit number of German cities. Sgt. Johnson Gets Bronze Star for North Africa Duty Sgt. William Johnson, son of Mrs. R. A. Johnson, Jacksonville, received citation for the bronze star medal January 4. Ha is now in an army hospital somewhere in France. Jobnson'i citation read: "For meritorious achievement in con nection with military operations against the enemy in the North African theater of operations from 8 November, 1942, to 17 August, 1943. The superior lead ershlp, skill and courage with which Sgt. Johnson performed his duties as a mortar squad cor poral, despite hasardoua combat conditions contributed immeas urably to the efficiency of his organization throughout the North African and Sicilian cam paigns." Sgt. Johnson has two broth ers, Simon and Otto, serving with the army in th Pacific. GRANTS PASS US0 TO CLOSE NEXT SATURDAY Grants Pass, April 11 An nouncement has been made by the USO Civilian Defense Rec reation committee that the USO clubrooms will close on Satur day of this week. Fundi from national USO for the project are no longer available, and further activities for entertainment of the service men and women must be purely a local project, committee members said. The plana was described as having a four-bladed propeller and being a "hybrid," resembling the "Hayabusa in sleekness and the Chokl in sturdiness.
