IN STABBING CASE , Charges against Leon Edward Champlin, 62, of 242 South Grape street, were dismissed by District Attorney George Nell son; his attorney. George Cod ding, said today. Champlin was charged with stabbing Pvt. Stan ley H. Sanchez, SCU, Camp White, on Ross Lane last Oct. 6. Nellson dismissed the charges for lack; of evidence, Codding saia. According to Champlin, he had picked Sanchez and a companion up and driven out Ross Lane, When Champlin stopped the car, Sanchez ordered him to turn over his car and money and struck Champlin when he refused to do so. To defend himself from the beating being administered by Sanchez, Champlin took a knife from his pocket and cut the sol dler on the arm. Sanchez was then driven to a local hospital by Champlin, who gave himself up to city police but was released on his own recognizance. Champlin was em ployed as a fireman at Medford airport and has been in civil service for 23 years. Sanchez was court-martialed for the attempted holdup and was given a dishonorable dis charge from the army, Codding said. 8 at. Home Sgt. March I. 1MB T ILLE QUINT BY 59-18 SCORE Medford's Black Tornado ad vanced another notch in their quest for a state tournament berth next week when they turned back Prineville, district three champions, 89 to 18 here last night. The two teams meet here again tonight, beginning at 8 o'clock, in the second of their best two-out-of-three series. Dick Fawcett, who was listed as definitely out of Medford's lineup early yesterday morning, and Jerry Ross, who was listed as a doubtful starter, were given sanction by their attending phy sicians late yesterday to play. PrinsTille Scores First Don Page, Prineville guard, scored the first basket in 25 sec onds. Nearly three minutes later Bob Watson hitfoi Medford to tie the score at 2-2. Fawcett added aiasket from out front to give Medford a 4 to 2 lead and from there on the Tornado was never headed. End of the first quarter favored Medford 8 to 3 and halftlme found the Tornado leading 24 to 6. Medford added 13 ooints in the third canto while Prineville was collecting seven, to lead 37 to 13 as the stanza ended. Prineville sorely missed the services of lanky Paul Thalhofer, who Is confined to a local hos pital with illness contracted af ter the team arrived here. Medford made 29 baskets out of 67 attempts for a .373 percent age while Prineville hit six out of 42 tries for a percentage of .143. Ross won the right to the match when he took two straight falls from Harold Davidson In the main event. Georges Dusette was first man out of the free-for-all, followed by Gust Johnson. In their three round match neither gained a fall, the bout ending In a draw. Jack Kiser followed Johnson out of the battle royal and was teamed with Pete Belcastro, who was eliminated by Ross and Da vidson. Belcastro won two out of three falls from Kiser In their four-round bout. Mary E. Ditsworth Former Resident i Of Prospect Dies The many friends of Mrs Mary E. Ditsworth will be sad dened to hear of her death Feb, 28 at Glendale. Calif. Mrs. Ditsworth was born In Iowa, May 14, 1856. Early In life she moved to Nebraska where she. made her home for many years. In 1909 she married J. F. Dits worth of Prospect, Orcg., who preceded her in death. She made her home In southern Oregon until 1940 when she left for Glendale to be near her son, Lester Lytle. She was a member of the Naz arene church. Besides her son, she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Lula Heald, Sebastopol, Calif.; Mrs. Nellie Russell, Hastings, Neb and Mrs. Nola Young, Houston, Tex., also several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bengtson of Jack son county, in a letter to the Mail Tribune today said he Is giving his support to House Joint Resolution 10, and Senate Joint Resolutions 10 anr 18. HJR 10 provides for a Joint interim committee consisting of two members of the senate and three members of the house for the purpose of investigating and studying the advisability of es tablishing institutions for the care, examination, specialized study and treatment of delin quent, under-privileged and mal adjusted children and generally to investigate child delinquency and rehabilitation of delinquent children. The committee Is empowered to hold public hearings and to make such surveys and investi gations as are deemed necessary and make a full report of its findings at the next legislative assembly. SJR 10 provides that a legis lative committee of two sena tors and three representatives be created to investigate the scale of salaries paid public employes of the state of Oregon with par ticular reference to salaries paid employes in the lower wage bracket. The committee is to compare salaries to those paid Ir private industry and make a full report to the legislative as sembly. The committee is to make recommendations as to the best method of adjusting the sal aries paid public employes so that these employes may be kept In public service under present costs of living. SJR 18 resolves that the state of Oregon and all its political subdivisions aid in the develop ment of coal resources In the state and that preference be giv en to its use in all public build' ings equipped with heating or steam producing facilities wher ever possible. Rep. Bengtson wrote that this resolution might possibly have some effect in pro moting development of the coal deposit on Roxy Ann mountain near Medford. though he con sidered the proposed legislation more in the light of a "gesture." Navy Recruiter , Urges Youths to : Seek Radar Post Lieut. Comdr. John F. Bleh- ler, officer In charge of navy re cruiting in Oregon will be in Medford Monday on tour of in spection of all substations, .ac cording to word received today by the Medford Recruiting Sta tion. - -1 Lt. Comdr. Blehler Is stressing the need for more men to be trained as radar technicians. He states that the need is greater than ever as most of Uncle Sam's fighting equipment is fully equipped with the Ingenious de vices which have given siKh superiority over the enemy. The men for this equipment are fully as important as the ma chines and the navy must have a continuing flow of qualified men to be trained as Radar Technicians. Lt. Comdr. Blehler urges every man wishing to serve his country to try first for radar training. Information can be obtained at the Recruiting Office in the Post Office Bldg.
