Without digging up the master
copy to show precisely what I
aid In numerous references to
the hospital delivery room I am
certain I have not said any such
thing here or elsewhere. Had I
said what you mean I would
have said such a rule is enforced
only or used only In shrdy in
stitutions, not "only used." More
over I have never argued that
anybody's relatives, neighbors or
lellow citizens should be present
at time of delivery. I have said
that in my opinion, and if the
patient wishes, her husband
should remain with her through
out delivery. And I say here that
I doubt the reliability or safety
of any hospital or other lying-in
Institution that excludes or at
temps to exclude the husband
from the delivery room.
From what I have seen of hos
pitals, good, bad and indifferent,
as medical student, intern, staff
physician, patient and visitor, I
believe the main reason for the
rule excluding the husband from
the delivery room is the desire
on the part of the people run
ning the institution to avoid law
luits for malpractice brought by
patients or their relatives . for
grave infractions of asepsis and
other sins of carelessness and

nursing, students of medicine
attend the confinement, not to
mention assorted practitioners,

questions whether the visiting
physicians have perchance Just

entirely to the individual phy-
