Th. 18, 1843 Society and Qubs Announce Troth Of Betty Whittle To Elwood Hedberg Mr. and Mr. wTDavid Whit tle of 123 H!,h street, Ashland, announce the engagement of their younger daughter, Betty, to Elwood B. Hedberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Elwood Hed berg of 1206 East Main street, Medford. No date has been set for the wedding since Mr. Hedberg Is In the navy and expects an over seas assignment In the near fu ture. Both young people are spend ing a few days In the valley. Miss Whittle, freshman student . at the University of Oregon, is home for a brief visit and Mr. Hedberg Is home on leave after completing training at Treasure Island, San Francisco. He re ports next to Shoemaker, Calif. Miss Whittle graduated from ' Ashland high school with the class of 1943 and was on the staff of the Mall Tribune until entering the university last fall. She is a member of the univer sity chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta. Her fiance graduated from Medford high school with ' the class of 1943 and shortly after entered the navy. His navy rating Is radio technician third class. Both the Whittles and the Hedbergs have resided In the valley many years and are wide ly known. Crawford Home -Scene of Dance For Young Folk Members of the Sub-Deb club and a group of friends were en tertained last Saturday evening at the home of Kay Elizabeth Crawford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J, E. Crawford, 306 Apple street, at a "sockop." The young people danced from eight until 11 o'clock and enjoyed re freshments. In the group were Billy Older, Jane Durno, Susan Drummond, Patsy Bottjer, Joan Dean, Bar bara Green, Joan Kldwell, Joanne Harrison, Virginia Rich mond, Leah Peabody, Florence Lion, Bebe MUlsaps, Carla John ion, Cap Perkins, Dick Bottjer, Conrad Holzgang, George Good man, James- ' Collins, James Hampson, David Wade, Jack Whltlock, Robert Rentchler, Kenneth Degerness. Teddy Ru- bensteln, John Dezell, Ray Earley. Darrel Cassland and Gerald Cleaves. Decorations and refreshments were In the valentine motif. Symposium Team To Speak Here For AAUW Meet "Post War .Relations with Russia" will be discussed by a symposium team from the Uni versity of Oregon at the Febru ary meeting of Medford branch American Association of Univer sity Women. The meeting .will be next Wednesday evening at the home of Miss Delia Whlsen ant, 418 Arcadia street, at 8 o clock. - Members of the team from the university are Miss Gloria Cor tozlan. Miss Mary Landry and Miss Karen Martin. A similar team presented one of the group's programs last winter, proving to be very interesting Hostess chairman for the eve nlng will be Mrs. W. E. Lantls, assisted by Mrs. Harold Free man, Mrs. Irene Anhorn and Miss Elizabeth Wilson. Mrs. Calkins to Speak Mrs. C. F. Calkins will be guest speaker at the meeting of the Women's Missionary society of the Presbyterian church Tues day at two o'clock. Mrs. Calkins is an experienced lecturer, hav ing been trait ed during Ihe last world war to sneak on war pro ject topics. Following the war she was trained as a speaker on the problems of rehabilitation of returned servicemen. The Rev. and Mrs. C. F. Cal kins are from Canyon City, Colo., and are in the city for a monui. Social Functions Of Masonic Orders To Be Held Soon Traditional social functions of various organizations of the Ma sonic lodge attract much atten tion In the valley each winter and two of these are scheduled for the near future. Wednesday. Feb, 21, Malta Commandery is holding a reception and ball and the annual reception and ball of Hillah Temple of the Shrine is scheduled for March 3. Malta Commandery's recep tion will honor the eminent commander, V. T. Wilson of Medford and Mrs. Wilson. The formal reception and ball will be at the Masonic Temple In Ashland and will be preceded by dinner at 6:45 o'clock. Illustrious Potentate and Mrs. Sam J. Stinebaugh and the Divan will be honored at the reception and ball to be given by Hillah Temple. The affair is to be in Grants Pass. A recent enjoyable affair was the Shrine club dance held at Burgoyne's last Monday night More than 100 Shriners and their ladies from all parts of the val ley attended. Among those present were Sam Stinebaugh of Grants Pass. Illustrious potentate of Hillah Temple, Mrs. F. L. Vannlce of Grants Pass, queen of Zuleima Temple, Daughters of the Nile; Past Queen Lenore Kellum of Medford; Jerry Jerome, O, O. Allenderfer and Elbert Lenox, past potentates of Hillah Tem ple. Tomorrow Zuleima Temple is to entertain the grand aueen. Elizabeth Eggert of Syracuse, N. x., at a special ceremonial to be held in Grants 'Pass. A din ner at the Redwood Hotel will follow. Daughters to Observe Washington's Birthday A program commemorating George Washington will be given at the meeting of Crater Lake chapter, Daughters of the Amer ican Revolution, Saturday, Feb. 24, at the nome of Mrs. W. W. P. Holt, II Corning court. Roll call will be answered with anecdotes of Washington. The refreshment committer will be Mrs. M. M. Morris and Miss Jane Snedlcor. Nile Ceremonial At Grants Pass Will Honor Queen In honor of the supreme queen, Mrs. Elizabeth Eggert of Syracuse, New York, Zule ima Temple, Daughters of the Nile, will hold a special cere monial tomorrow in the Masonic Temple at Grants Pass. The meeting is scheduled for 2 p. m. and a large number of Jackson county members plan to attend. One of the largest classes of candidates ever to be initiated by Zuleima Temple will be taken in at that time. Follow ing the ceremonial a tea will be given In honor of the new mem bers and the supreme queen In the evening a banquet Is to be served at the Redwood Hotel at 7 o'clock to honor Mrs. Eg gert. The affair is for temple members and their escorts and will be followed by a program and dancing. Mrs. Eggert is now visiting Nydia Temple at Portland, the sist temple of the order to be visited since she ascended the throne in June of last year. The queen plans to visit the remain der of the 69 chapters before next June. Mrs. Eggert has been a mem ber of the order since 1928 and has been active In the temple at Syracuse and in the supreme temple. Her term will end at the supreme temple session ten tatively set for June in Daven port, la. She is to arrive in Grants Pass Monday morning.' SCU Women's Club February Meeting Is Held Thursday Members of the SCU 1913 Women's club held the Febru ary meeting Thursday afternoon, the affair being at the Officers' club at Camp White. Luncheon was served at one o'clock from small tables decorated with spring flowers. Thirty-two mem bers were present. Bridge and bingo followed a brief business meeting, with Mrs. Julius Hale in charge of the games. Bridge prizes were won by Mrs. Thomas McCullough, Mrs. Walter Bryant and Mrs. Burnell Koollsh, while Mrs Glen Duckworth and Mrs. Israel Sllverberg won bingo, prizes. , Valentine Party Is Held By Class A valentine party followed the meeting of the Alpha Delta class of the First Christian church held in the recreation room of the church Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Charles Stearns presided over the business meet ing. Mrs. Clyde Hon led devotions and a solo was presented by Mrs. Clara Hodgkins. Games were played during the social meeting and valentines were exchanged. Refreshments were served by a committee of which Mrs. F. E. Wahl was chairman. Twenty two were present. Lodge Grand Chief Arriving Tuesday. To Visit Pytkians Mrs. Sadie Graham of Corval 11s will be in Medford Tuesday of this week to pay her official visit to Medford Pythian Sisters lodge that evening. Mrs. Gra ham Is grand chief of the lodge. A banquet will be given at the Holland Hotel at 7 o'clock to honor Mrs. Graham and fol lowing dinner the members will proceed to the Knights of Pyth ias hall where initiation of five new members will be held. Those who have not already made reservations for the ban quet are asked to call Mrs. Wil liam Swartz, 2813, or Mrs. Harry Barneburg, 2368. It is stated that those attending the banquet should assemble In the Sixth Street lobby of the hotel. A social hour and refresh ments will follow the initiation ceremonies at the hall. Members who have not al ready contributed fruit for the Pythian home are asked to bring it to the hall Tuesday. Dinner Given Tuesday For Portland Guests - Mr. and Mrs. Silas King and daughter, Mary Ann, returned the middle of the week to Port land after having spent several days here with relatives. Tues day evening they were dinner guests of their aunt, Mrs. F. B. Bellinger, 12S North Holly street. Other guests were Mrs. King's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Fisk. Two Groups Hold Valentine Party Wednesday Evening The American Legion Post and auxiliary members enjoyed a valentine party at their regu Iar meetings Wednesday eve ning in the armory club rooms. Harry Young, commander of the post sang, accompanied by El sie Carlton Strang. Leon Jacobs was master of ceremonies for a quiz program under the direction of the new members of the auxiliary, Ma bel Wylie, Jean Hoag, Gloria Minnecl and Helen Jacobs. - The refreshment table was decorated in red and white in the Valentine motif and refresh ments were served by Lorena Leach, Rose Bunch and Malsie Dalley. Next meeting of the auxiliary will be February 28 and all members are asked to bring scis sors for Red Cross cutting. Talent Couple To Be Honored On Anniversary Talent Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Cook of Talent will celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniver sary Thursday, Feb. 22, and in observance of the anniversary an. open house is being sponsor ed in their honor by the Metho dist church of Talent. It will be at the Cook home on Wagner avenue from 2 until 8 o'clock in the afternoon and all friends of the couple are invited to can. A program of accordion mu sic will be furnished by Marie Furrer and Herbert Combs dur- ine the afternoon and women of the church will serve refresh ments. Mr. and Mrs. Cook were mar rled in 1885 in Berlin, Vermont where they lived until moving to Dickenson, N. Dak., in 1888. Mr. Cook worked as a carpenter and later as a rancher and in 1910 the couple moved to Ash land where Mr. Cook owned a small orchard and also engaged In his trade. In 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Cook moved to Talent and engaged in business. Part of the subsequent years were spent in Seattle and Klamath but In recent years the Cooks have made their home continuously in Talent. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cook have served on the town council and at one time Mr. Cook taught an adult Bible class of the Metho dist church with an enrollment of 28 men. S. F. Club Holds Valentine Party Mrs. Viola Trautman enter tained the S. F. Club at a valen tine party at her home in Cen tral Point Wednesday. Lunch eon was served at noon and the afternoon spent in games with prizes going to Mrs. Clara Tilley and Mrs. Ilda Vickoren.
