Feb. 3 (U.R) A driverless locomotive raced 25 miles through the desert to day at 80 miles an hour before being derailed by a leiegrapner, Santa Fe railroad officials revealed. Last month was unusual for weather in that no snow fell, the monthly surVey of the weather bureau at the airport shows. Average snow fall for the month is 3.3 inches, the records show, over a period since 1911 when the bureau was establish ed. This average figure was con siderably raised by the extra ordinary year of 1830 when 22.S Inches of snow fell during the month of January. , Precipitation for the month was 1.65 inches, .66 inches less than the normal of 2.31 for this month. Heaviest fall of the month was .31 inches the night of January 9 and the morning of January 6. Highest temperature of the month was 56 degrees on Jan uary 13 and lowest was 20 de grees on January 28, the sur vey shows. This is somewhat above normal, mean for the month being 40.4 degrees as against 37.9 degrees, the normal. Seventeen days during the month the temperature fell to 32 degrees or lower, five days were clear, eight were partly cloudy and IS were cloudy. On 12 days there was a precipita tion of .01 inches or more and heavy fog hung over the valley for 14 days. On one day, Janu ary 18, hail fell. Since ' the weather bureau doesnt believe in such fantasies as Ground' Hog Day, the stall seemed a little reluctant to com ment on whether the famous anl mal saw his shadow or not last. Friday. Officially, the records' show that the day was cloudy, but since the sun did struggle through once or twice, who knows what the Ground Hog saw? ' Sunday. Bunch of McMinn- ville ruefully reported to police. today that a ride in a Portland taxicab cost her a suitcase and $73 overcoat and she didn't even get to the address she gave. Here is her story as she told it to police. She entered the cab at the Union bus depot and after a circuitous trip around town, dur nig which the driver dropped off two sailors at their addresses, the driver took her back to the depot, declaring there .was no Rhine street in Portland. Then he demanded $4.70 for his fare and when Miss Bunch was unable to produce that amount, the driver took the suit case and coat as "security." Now police are looking for the cabbie. Incidentally, the cabbie was wrong about the address There is a Rhine street In Port land. TONGUE POINT TO L Astoria, Ore., Feb. 3 (U.R) The U. S. naval air station at Tongue point will see the addi tion this month of a line main tenance training school for PBM flying boats, Comdr. H. J. Mc- Nulty, commanding officer, an nounced today. About 1,000 enlisted men and 70 officers will be trained at the school during the opening eight weeks' period, as part of the navy's air center program in Chicago. Men will be trained for serv. Ice and maintenance of the PBM type of naval patrol plane, a two-motored flying boat. The instruction staff will be made up of 23 officers and 225 i listed men. LEGISLATURE TO Errol Flynn Home, Admits He's Wedded New York, Feb. 3 (U.R) Movie Actor Errol Flynn, in a ibrief statement issued by War ner Brothers, said today that he was married, and It was assum ed his new wife was Nora Ed- dington, the former cigaret girl who recently gave birth to his child in Mexico City. ' What s all the commotion about?" Flynn's statement said "Sure I'm married and I like it and it's nobody's business but ours." The swash-buckling movie star was not available for question ing.
