BIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. Jan. IS. IMS JOHNSON AWAITS CHANCE TO MEET Another capacity crowd Ii ex pected at Medford armory to night when Gloomy Gust John- . ion tries his hand at an attempt to stop the Gray Mask In the top main event of Promoter Mack Llllard's weekly bone-crushing contest. "Old Stoneface," as the Mask Is known to the grappling profession, has promised to un mask if legitimately beaten and Johnson aims to do a thorough Job of it In order to find out what the Mask has under his hood which makes his head butts so dangerous. Llllard cau tioned that his agreement with the Mask does not call for him to unmask if he loses a match by a foul but only if he is planed for the best two out of three falls. Interest In the semi-wlndup has reached a high pitch the past few days, closely rivaling the main event enthusiasm. Terrible Tony Ross will be given a chance to get even with Jack Klser for accepting a decision on a foul in their match three weeks ago. Ross claims his choke hold was not enough to justify Referee Earl Yoakley's stopping the match and promises to go all-out to even the score. Ernie Piluso and Milt Olson meet in the 8:30 curtain raiser. TORNADO TO FACE ATG.P. Commissioner Seeks Proper Method For Scoring Fights DO YOU WANT TO SELL YOUR CAR? $e. Ui ' Top Prices. (U.R) Eddie Eagan, new chairman of the New York boxing commls-J sion, will tackle soon the most perplexing problem in all sports: the proper scoring of fights. He seeks an accurate, fool-proof system to neplace the dissatisfac tory round-by-round method cur rently used In New York and many other states. Blunt-nosed Eddie, former Olympic and A.E.F. champion made this announcement at the annual boxing writers' dinner last night in Ruppert's brewery where Li Cmdr. Benny Leonard was presented with the Edward J. Neil award for outstanding contributions to the sport dur ing 1944. Eagan seeks solution to the problem that has baffled experts since finish-fights faded out in most states In the early 1900's. uesplte improvements In tech nique and staging during almost a half-century, . no satisfactory method of scoring has yet been discovered. Close contests In the ring, however, usually result In dis agreement among the officials In split decisions, and sometimes draws. These verdicts nearly al ways are accompanied by vocif erous disagreement among box ing writers and fans. This un fortunate situation prevails for the lowliest preliminary at a small club or for a million-dollar heavyweight title fight. Several recent decisions In New York provoked such wide spread criticism and argument that Chairman Eagan decided: "Here is my first major task as new head of the commission." In seeking a solution, he will hold conferences with ring offi cials and with boxing writers, meanwhile drawing upon his own experiences as an amateur boxing champion and as an offi cial at amateur bouts.
