Captain Home Capt. Robert
von der Hellen arrived in Med'
ford Thursday to spend three
weeks with his parents. Mr; and
Mrs. Carl von der Hellen, Eagle
Point. Capt. von der Hellen has
been with the 8th air force in
England since June of last year
and recently completed 39 mis
sions. He holds the air medal
with five oak leaf clusters. He
was accompanied home by his
sister. Miss Pat von der Hellen,
who is now a student at the
Portland College of Nursing and
training at St. Vincent's hos
pital. Miss von der Hellen re
turned to Portland Sunday,
Capt. von der Hellen will report
next at Santa Ana, Calif., for re

KILLED IN ACTION
Marion (Bud) Hllr, Jr., 20, for
merly of Prospect, was killed in
action in Belgium Dec. 23 ac
cording to information received
here by his aunt, Mrs. Amelia
Fowler, 611 West Fourth street.
Hill was a paratrooper.
The young man entered the
service In the fall of 1944,
trained at Camp Roberts, Calif.,
and after transferring to the
paratroops was trained" at Ft.
Benning, Ga. He has been dver
seas about four months.
Survivors include his father,
Marion Hill, Sr., a veteran of the
last war and now a patient at
the veterans' hospital at Walla
Walla, Wash., and a sister, Mrs.
E. L. Likely of Ellensburg, Wash.

considerable detail the natural
question of "where does the
state get Its money?"
The state's income comes from
2S different sources, according
to budget makers, but the state
sales tax far outstrips all other
sources in the amount of money
it yields.
The governor's budget dis
closed that the California gov
ernment expects to collect $237,
000.000 from the sales tax in the
coming two years, or about a
third of all state income which
is estimated at Just short of
$713,000,000.

mother, Mrs. Julius Nelsen
states. Pfc. Nelsen was reported
missing about three months ago
and Mrs. Nelsen writes that a
letter has been received from
him giving details of his impris

Medford high, school, was in
Medford last July on furlough.

played a steadier undertone at
closing time.
'Early unsettlement was trac
ed to the appointment of Henry
A. Wallace to succeed Jesse
Jones as secretary of commerce
and head of several other gov
ernment agencies. The subse
quent recovery .was attributed to
belief the appointment will have
tough sledding in the senate.
Other factors in the recent de
cline are listed as the Russian
successes seen as hastening the
reconversion period with its
many problems, and the securi
ties and exchange proposal to
eliminate the floor trader on the
major exchanges.

Clarence Eads, proprietor of
Eads Second Hand store, was
taken to St. Vincent s hospital in
Portland yesterday in the Con-ger-M
orris ambulance. Eads,
who has been ill at his home
here for some time was believed
to be getting worse by his at
tending physician, who reeonv
mended the trip to Portland.

of Texas, who has been caring
for him during his illness here,
his brother, George Eads, and a

enced by local police in several
years occurred between 2 a. m.
Saturday and 2 a. m. Sunday,
Chief of Police McCredie stated
today. During that time there
were no arrests, no calls of im
portance and nothing recorded
on the police "blotter" but a
'sleeper", a man without lodging
allowed to sleep in the Jail.
'It was the quietest 24 hours
in recent years, at least since
Camp White was established",
