Of College Club
la Large Affair

Rogue River valley entertained
at its annual New Year lunch
eon, the affair being given the
afternoon of January 13 at the
Presbyterian church social hall.
More than 80 members and

Mrs. E. H. Hedrlck, local
novelist and short story writer,

er." She built a background for
her topic by characterizing the
different periods In history dur
ing which cultures rose and died
away and by showing that each
artist and writer was motivated
by corresponding and clearly
discernible Impulses.
Mrs. Hedrlck stated that In
her opinion In our rather world
ly and materialistic age writers,
especially the younger ones, are
apt to be' Influenced by t h e
great difference In prices paid
t. popular magazines as com
pared to those ranking higher
In the field and writers who
might eventually produce some
thing artistic and of lasting im
portance succumb to the temp
tation to write "formula" ma
terial for which they are well
paid.
Enjoyable musical numbers
were given by Miss Bertha Aik
en, violinist, accompanied by
Mrs. Amos Willetts. Both are
from Ashland.
Miss Vera Humphrey was so
cial chairman for the affair and

much praise for the fine lunch
eon and unusually beautiful

candles with acacia and purple
heather which gave an impres
sion of advancing spring.
