Medford high school bas-i keteers jumped into the lead of the southern Oregon conference Friday night when they defeat ed Ashland 39 to 27 for their seventh consecutive win of the season. They extended this to eight wins the following night with a 30 to 28 victory over Eureka. It was the "first set-back for the Loggers, who scored a 40-30 victory over Grants Pass the previous night. Biggest upset of the local sports picture came when Cen tral Point dumped Grants Pass 46 to 39 Tuesday night. Medford junior )igh took the lead in the southern Oregon conference when they defeated Ashland jun ior high 28 to 17. This week-end Medford plays Grants Pass there Friday night and here Saturday night while Klamath Falls invades Ashland for two games. Herb Grey has been elected president of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. High honors have been given three additional men from this county. Master Sgt. Orville C. Caster, artilleryman, -has been awarded the legion of merit for outstanding service as battalion motor sergeant in Italy; Sgt. Wayne White, paratrooper, "has been awarded the silver star for heading a patrol which went back of the German lines for vital information, and Pfc. Mel- vin B. Woods has won the bronze star for making two trips under heavy rifle and machinegun fire to obtain ammunition for his company during the Leyte cam paign. . Staff Sgt. Ira David Luman is a member of the carbine shooting championship station team of the 8th AAF in England. According to Sgt. Gene W. Tedrick, the mud in the Euro pean battle sectors is much worse- than the famous Jackson county "sticky." The sergeant wrote to say "that good old sticky mud at home is live pave ment compared to this." He was recently awarded the combat in fantryman's badge. A dispatch from Italy says that Robert G. Brown, co-pilot of a B-24, has been promoted to first lieutenant and the officer wrote home to say that he had visited the Isle of Carpi while on a recent leave, finding it as beautiful as song writers declar ed. J. F. Richardson of Trail, in England and France for more than two years, has been pro moted to lieutenant-colonel. Sec ond Lt. Curtis E. Hopkins is now with the 15th AAF in Italy, Arriving in this country for hospitalization are Pfc. John Brewer, Lt. Fred Traylor and Pfc. Alfred J. Hardy., Brewer, wounded in Italy in October, is at Barnes in Vancouver and wears the purple heart and com bat infantryman's badge. Traylor, who has been serving with the paratroops in Holland, is in Denver for treatment and Hardy is being temporarily treat ed at Stark hospital in Charles ton, S. C. Both Pfc. Recently here were Jack Bur- dell, Rdm3c, home after several months at sea during which his ship was under fire many times, and Lt. Com. Wayne L. Goff who recently returned after eight months service in the Aleu tian Islands. He holds the Pacific war zone bar and the merchant ma rine combat bar for participating in action against the enemy in the Halmahera islands and oth er places. His brother, Claude, is also in the navy and is at Tacoma, Wash. Cpl. Eldon Chas- tain, radioman in a Joint assault signal company, arrived home this week after 20 months over seas. He participated in battles in Sicily, Italy and Normandy. A copy of the Italian edition of the Stars and Stripes has been received from Sgt. John C. An derson and Cpl. William M. Strode wrote to say that he spent' Christmas week in Rome. Jimmy Morrow has been grad uated from navigators' school at Hondo, Tex., and commissioned a flight officer while Jerry Vaw ter has been commissioned a second lieutenant after graduat ing from Ft. Benning. Both were home on leave. Lt. Vawter ran into a streak of bad hick and was hospitalized twice during his training period for broken bones. He has reported to Ft. McClellan, Ala., as an instructor. Kenneth J. Jones graduated from Ellington Field In Texas as a flight officer and navigator and was home for a time. His brother, Ensign Stanley C. Jones, Jr., is now on duty In the Pa cific. New paratroopers are Cpl. John Neel and Pvt. James F. Harris . who completed jump training at Ft. Benning. Dorr Franklin Barrett, who was on Midway island when the Decem ber 7 attack was launched and who subsequently was a Hono lulu police officer, is now taking marine training at San Diego. Pvt. Harold A. Clement grad uated from the AAF mechanics' school for B-24s at Keesler field and Pfc. Rollin C. Rosenberger has been pronioted to technician fifth grade at Ft. Monmouth. N. J. Robert C. Crowl, at fireman's school, San Diego, Is now a sea man second class, and James C. Martin has been promoted to aviation machinist's mate, third class. Ernest G. Childreth. Flc. is now at a navy diesel school at Richmond, Va.; Sgt. John Wil kinson is at Keesler field for re assignment, and Ensign Herbert E. Harper is home after study ing communications at Harvard university for the past six months. Also home is Robert Young from Ft. Bliss, Tex., and First Sgt. Dick Lewis was home recently from Ft. Lewis. Robert L.
