YANKEE RETREAT TERRIBLEORDEAL Division Cut to Pieces In Seven Day Back-track Survivors Tell Experience By J. Edward Murray United Press Correspondent Allied Headquarters, Paria, Dec. 29 (U.PJ The American retreat before the German of fensive was terrible. Two weather-beaten, weary GI's who came down from their last foxholes between embat tled Bastogne and Neufchateau couldn't remember today all the defensive lines where they were battered and beaten and out numbered. Ordeal Recalled Memories of that noise, misery, cold, and death kept flooding into their minds, in terrupting their story. But they stood, shy and unbelieving In the safety of this headquarters press room and remembered enough to prove that war has changed for the worse since Sherman's day. Staff Sgt. James H. Williams of Harrisburg, Pa., and PFC Abraham Rich of Queens, N, Y., said their American division took the impact of the surging German attack east of Clervaux in Luxembourg, and was cut to pieces in a seven-day retreat, The refrain of Williams slow, deliberate 45-minute talk was: We killed Germans." Tragic Story His was a tragic story of de fense lines dug and held and then lost during seven terrible days when his communications platoon of a headquarters com pany lost all but 14 ot its 43 men. ' But the Pennsylvania ser geant was ready with a note of defiance: "I accounted for six Germans 1 know of and I hope to hell they are dead," he snapped. Rich s story was almost tne same a story of holding as long as they could. He said his GI rifle company was virtually helpless against Tiger tanks. Those seven days have made Williams look older than his 34 years probably because in all that time he had only one hour ot sleep. "When the enemy was con tacted on the afternoon of Dec. 17, our division received an or der to attack," Williams redated. "But the order was unnecessary. We were already fighting like hell." Naxls Like Craiy The Germans, he said, fought like maniacs . . . yelling, scream ing, firing small arms mortars, tanks, artillery, hand grenades, anti-tank weapons and even flares everything at point blank range. "We took It and fired back with everything we had," Wil liams said. ' "But finally Ger man infantry, riding on tanks, stormed our command post like a bunch of drunks all hopped up." At midnight after the first day's fighting, the American units were surrounded. Then came the order to break up into groups of 12 or 15 men and in filtrate to the rear, crawling for what seemed endless miles on their bellies, scaling cliffs, and swimming icy rivers, and always fighting off the oncom ing .Nazis. Nazis Murder Captive Yanks, Stomp Faces With Hobnails By Boyd Lewis United Press Correspondent With U. S. Forces on Western Front, Dec. 29 (U.R) Ameri can army officials announced today that Nazi SS guardsmen shot down in cold blood Unit ed States lieutenant and four doughboys captured west of Bastogne and then stomped their faces with hobnailed boots. Disclosing another authenti cated case of the Germans mur dering their prisoners, authori ties said the report had been verified, and tallied with the announced policy of the SS Elite guard In this campaign. The only survivor of the ruthless slaughter was wounded badly, but managed to crawl a tortuous mile and a half to the American lines. The six-man patrol was sur rounded and forced to surren der on the night of Dee. 17 In the area west of Bastogne, Bel gium transportation center where an American force was encircled and now has been re lieved. Marked For Death The survivor was marked for death with his companions after their German captors had ques tioned them perfunctorily. A hail of bullets crumpled them to IVe ground.
