EVA1N TALES FBI Records Prove Effort To Keep Out Of Army Fails To Pay Dividends By Arthur T. DaOraT United Press Correspondent Washington, Dec. 27. (U.PJ More than 11,000 draft dodgers and accomplices have learned the bard way that It doesn't pay to try to dodge the draft, For their efforts since mo, tney have been sentenced to prison terms totaling 28,481 years and fines aggregating $1,000,862. And yet, according to the fed' eral bureau of Investigation, "It Is not difficult to stay out of trouble insofar as selective ser vice regulations are concerned' Casts Cited FBI records tell a bizarre tale of draft dodging by city slickers, country bumpkins and in-be-tweeners. For example, take the case of Everett Stewart, Louis ville, Ky who reported his own death to his draft board while posing as his half-brother. He got three years. Roy William Helfenbelen, Darrouzett, Tex., was so anxious to sta yout of the armed services that he had six teeth removed by three different dentists within a period of three weeks. He kept out of the army all right but he, too, landed in Jail for three years. The brothers Vosytlus, George 23, and Adolph, 22, of Water bury, Conn., hit upon what they thought was a perfect bit of dodging but they were wrong. George, who didn't think he'd like army food, and his brother rowed out into Winnepesaukee lake. New Hampshire, over turned the boat and swam ashore unobserved. G-men, who were called Into the case when the lake was drag ged and no bodies were found, captured the brothers In Ari zona. Given an opportunity to be inducted voluntarily, the broth ers Ironically failed to pass their physical' examination so tney were tried, convicted ana sen tenced. Too Many Snakes Ponder the strange case ot James Louis Sharp, husky, 34- vear-old Athens. Ark., woods man who thought notning oi defying the government - but couldn't stand to be lonesome and around large rattlesnakes. Emerging from the woods where he remained hidden for seven months, Sharp said on surren derlng that in addition to lone- someness and rattlesnakes, he feared he might become ill and die; that he might freeze to death and that the mosquitoes 'almost ate me up." These discomforts were not present at the federal prison to which he was sen tenced for two years.. J. Edgar Hoover, chief of the G-men, frankly admits that his agents can never be sure what facts will be uncovered In any Investigation. In proof, there is cited the case of a negro regis trant who is given the fictitious teg of "Oscar Everett" in FBI public records, who turned out to be a woman when "he" was ordered in for a physical examl nation. In 1936, it was found, "Oscar married a widow with three children whom she subsequently supported from wages earned by working alongside men in hard physical toll. "He" or "she" was not prosecuted because the gov ernment held that the masquer ade was not based on fraudulent Intent. Fortune Teller Falls Mrs. Cora Blanche Teets, a fortune teller by occupation muffed a good opportunity to ioreieu ner own future. According to the FBI. Mrs. Teets offered to sell Andy Fer- guson (fictitous name), a pros pective draftee, "stuff to keep you from going" into the army aiier sne naa overheard a con' versation in a "share-the-ride' taxicab in Clarksburg. W. Va The proposal was reported by "Ferguson" to G-men who trap ped Mrs. Teets with marked money. Upon questioning she report edly admitted she had counselled Ferguson to evade the draft hui insisted she was only "Joking." A Jury must have thought it was a bum Joke because they gave her five years. The war wasn't this country's affair so far as Paul Young (fictitous) was concerned, it de veloped. When FBI agents ap prehended him In a HmvMv. wooded section of upper Michi gan, ne aian't know he had to register for the draft; had lived alone in the woods for in had no radio; read no news papers and had no knowledge of current events. For this pro gram was something different. Though the children's age range was from 3 to 14, this was no rural affair. A public address system had to be used to carry the childish voices through the vast auditorium. No expense had been snared In the costuming. The skirts of the tiny tap dancers were mere ruffles about their waists. A doz en young girls posed and panto mimed, robed in misty clouds of chiffon. Colored lights played over them and they were like something from another world. There was a small boy band which played the latest Jive. A potential Fred Astair and his partner did smooth and intricate dancing. Oh, it was all very ultra, for these, so tho title of the per formance assured us, were the "Stars of the Future." Yet chil dren are, thank God, Just chll dren, whether In a rural school or In a vast city auditorium. The awkward graces of childhood can't be sophisticated out of them. So now once in a while one of the performing youngsters would get off the beat of the music and, with a look of con sternatlon at his fellow perform era, would do his best to get back in the groove. Uncertain young voices sometimes made closer harmony than the com poser had intended. The best of all however and that which sent tho audience into amused but sympathetic chuckles was the urgency which posing as a doll in a cellophane came over a four year old miss box. After an hour and a half of being a beautiful doll, nature reminded her she was, after all. Just a real live girl with very real recurrent needs to attend to. She lifted first one dimpled knee then the other and there was strain and a growing fear on the round dimpled face. She crossed her legs; she uncrossed them and Jiggled In Increasing aaltatlon.
