BRITISH INST
ELAS YIELD GUNS
Athens, Dec. 16 (U.R) The
central committee of the Greek
anti-government Elas made a
conditional offer today to with
draw its forces from Athens and
Piraeus, where they were fight
ing the Greek regular army
troops and British soldiers
through the streets at the end
of the second week of civil war.
Official quarters disclosed
the offer was made In a letter
to Lt. Gen. R. M. Scobie, British
commander of allied forces in
Greece.
Scobie replied Immediately
that the Elas had not agreed to
disarm its troops one of the
fundamental differences be
tween him and the Elas leaders
and that if they agreed to sur
render their arms as well as
evacuate Attica, he felt that
other terms could be agreed
upon and the civil war ended.

(continued Dr. Osier) arterios

old age. (Involution means retro

premature decline, or, according
to Webster it means "presenile

Now I wouldn't say this If 1

Los Angeles, Dec. 16 flMQ--Col.
Joseph J. CanellBy former
quartermaster at the Santa Ana
airbase, and two Santa Ana busi
nessmen late today were convict
ed by a federal court Jury of con
spiracy to defraud the govern
ment. In an Indictment returned last
August 31... Canella, veteran
army officer, was accused of col
lecting about $7000 between
February, 1942, and October,
1943, in selling concessions and
Jobs at the aiibase. ' "
Convicted with him by the
jury, which deliberated almost
24 hours, were Harry E. McCor
mac and Raymond M. Wykoff,
officials of the Excelsior Cream
ery Co., of Santa Ana.
Col. Canella's defense was that
his bank deposits were swollen
wa,,rt hi. anlnrv bv winnings
on horse races and not on payoffs
for airbase Jobs ana concessions.
The government's case re
volved about the testimony of
James M. Campbell, Santa Ana
real estate man who was the
self-styled "go-between" for Ca
nella in deals tor airbase conces
sions and Jobs. Campbell claimed
he collected two per cent, which
was paid to Canella, from the
Excelsior company for the milk
concession at the base.
Excelsior officials claimed the
two per cent paid Campbell was
a legitimate brokerage fee, and
declared the name of Canella did
not figure in their dealings with
Campbell.

WE ALL?
looked at 20, and every one al
60 ditto in respect to 40. After
all, it Is a question of health and
not of age.
So far as prematura graying,
premature aging, premature de
cline is concerned it is mainly
nutritional deficiency..
In the first place, as I explain
in the pamphlet "Young Folks
and Old Folks" (copy mailed if
you provide stamped pre-ad-drcssed
envelope) there is al
most a universal deficiency of
calcium and vitamin D, and of
vitamin B complex, particularly
the "anti-gray hair vitamins"
calcium pantothenate, para
aminobenzoate, riboflavin, etc.,
thanks to ultrarefined diet and
fear of exposure. .Then, too, in
most' instances there is also, io
dine deficiency. . .
If you ask me I do not be
lieve any of the things men
tioned will, restore the original
color to hair that has turned
gray. I do believe premature de
cline and all of its manifesta
tions can be prevented by sup
plementing the diet with the vit
amins and minerals mentioned,
or with foods that supply ade
quate amounts of the essential
vitamins and minerals, and suf
ficient exposure of the body to
sunshine or skyshine.
' Now take Juan Ponce de
Leone, for example or no, I
see we can'tv take him today.
We'll hold him for a day or two.

No Poisonous Effect
What poisonous effect if any would
children get from eating frankfurters
or other meat products which contain
the "usual curing agents" ' sodium
nitrite and sodium nitrate? (C. H. F.)
Answer Potassium nitrate (salt
peter) Is used In curing, salting or
pickling, meats to give a bright red
color. It is harmless. Some is convert
ed into potassium nitrite , equally
harmless. Sodium nitrate (Chill salt
peter) likewise.
