Youth Gets $5,000 From Bank, Later Arrested, Lad Returned Home Tacoma, Wash., Dec. IS U.B The next time you know ol little boy who plays hookey from school, you can tell him what happened to live-year-old Sonny Fisher who decided to accept an Ice cream cone from a nice-looking man instead of go ing to kindergarten and got used aa a decoy, in a 15000 bank robbery. I Sonny got hla ice cream, cone chocolate but he had to spend two hours in police sta tion yesterday answering all kinds of questions while waiting for his mother to come and get him. The thief, Gerald Barnes, 18, got his $5000 but had to re linquish it to the FBI when they caught him six hours later. It happened like this: As Sonny was walking to school, dreaming of riding on the "bumpety-bumps" at the playground, a man in a dark suit approached him and said, "You don't have to go to school this afternoon. Come with me and I'll buy you cn Ice cream cone." The man bought Sonny the cone and took him for a ride on two city buses until the pair arrived at the Puget Sound Na tional bank. Going into the bank, they approached the cashier's cage where the man slipped a note to the cashier which said, "Unless you give me $5,000, I'll kill you and the littlo boy and the little boy Is not mine." Mrs. Shanon Mitchell, the eashier, shoved some tens and twenties at the man and the pair left the bank. When they saw policeman standing on the cor ner. Sonny's new friend dashed toward the waterfront. Sonny, alone on i crowded downtown street, began to cry. One of the Fishers' neighbors found the boy and notified the Jioliceman who meanwhile had earned of the robbery. Through pushing the cal endar ahead, the lad's parents brought him national attention, plus the Interest of a Denver spe cialist. At the request of the special ist, "Nubbins" was brought to Denver and examined. It was de termined then that an operation might do the trick, which appar ently did.
