They further maintained that creation of the monument re moved a sufficient amount of property from the Teton county tax roll to practically liquidate the state. i The monument Included 82,- 117 acres of land reportedly Durchased by John D. Rocke feller. Jr.. at a cost of aooroxl mately $1,500,000 and tendered by him as a gift to the federal government. ' Rep. James W. Mott, R., Ore. described creation of the manu ment as "a very great Injustice" and declared it was "one of the very worst examples of execu tlve use of legislative authority." Similar objections were raised by Rep. Harris Ellsworth, K, Ore., who called upon the house to pass the bill "and let our voices be heard." He maintained President Roosevelt's act was an "abuse" of the antiquities act. It was only a month ago that the voters of Marshfield approv ed a change In name to Coos Bay. Now the city council has scheduled an election December 28 to determine if the name should be changed back to Marshfield. Here's the situation (we'll try to be brief): The town was founded as Marshfield, probably because of the marshy tldelsnds surround ing Coos Bay on the Oregon coast. Earlier this year, it was proposed that Marshfield and its close neighbor, North Bend, merge and assume the new joint nam of Coos Bay. The proposi tion was defeated, chiefly be cause North Bend wanted no part of the amalgamation. Citizens of Marshfield then decided to change over to Coos Bay and did so at the Novem ber 7 election. Attorney Claude Giles pre sented 232 names on petitions asking the city council to au thorize another election on grounds the recent change was confusing and they wanted Marshfield back again. The charter and manager form of government adopted as part of the change in November will not be affected in the new spec ial election. Salem. Ore.. -Dee. 12 (U.R) The validity of this Oregon Prop erty law was not affected by the recent decision of the U, S. su preme court, which held that husband and wife may not use the provisions of the Oklahoma Community Property law to les sen their income taxes, Attor ney uenerai George Neuner ad vised Gov. Earl Snell in a writ ten opinion today. But the per missable application of the law was limited, the opinion said. While the validity of the Ok lahoma law was not questioned, the use of It in reporting In comes for tax purposes was, and that application can be made to the Oregon law, tht. governor advised. . ' Recommendation! for clause protecting persons who have al ready made use of tht law, if it were to be repealed, wert made in the opinion. ' "In any event," the attorney general saia, it is aeemea ad visable not to repeal the law, dui to auora a means Dy wnicn Dersons who elected to avail themselves of it may revoke such action. That purpose can beK' accomplished by amendment of the present act or by a sep arate act." Dec. 12 U.B The Blue Network was threat ened with a series of wildcat strikes today by James C. Petrll lo and his American Federation of Musicians, according to Net work President Mark Woods. Woods said a dispute arose after the national labor relations board reversed an agreement the network signed giving Petrillo's AFI control of the record changers. The NLRB ruled that the Na tional Association of Broadcast Engineers and Technicians had jurisdiction over employment of such workers, except in the Chi cago area where the "pancake turners" have been in Petrillo's union for some years. Woods said his company -was "perfectly willing" to accept the decision of the NLRB. However, he said, Petrillo has warned that if the network does not keep the agreement with the AFM he will order a series of wildcat strikes by withdrawing musicians "from our programs at sporadic Intervals."
