ULTRA VI0LE1 LIGHT USED TO KILL BACTERIA Cleveland (U.R) The General Electric Co. is making a lamp which kills germs in food, water and air by means of ultra-violet rays. The instrument is called the germicidal lamp a long, thin bulb that looks like an exagger ated test tube, and . which kills germs in less than a minute. Although the lamp has been in use for several years in hos pitals, industrial plants and re search laboratories, its accom plishments have not been dis closed by the company until re cently. The company does not claim that the use of germicidal en emy of this nature will elimi nate the possibility "ot contract ing diseases commupicated by air-borne bacteria. The effective germicidal en ergy emitted by the lamp is pro duced by electric current pass ing through mercury vapor at low pressure. Develpoment of. the lamp has made possible, company off cials say, the practical use of ef fective germicidal energy to solve many hygienic and indus trial problems involving organ isms ranging from mold spores and yeast cells to pathogenic germs and viruses. Caution on Use Officials say, however, that the lamp can be dangerous if improperly used. Ultra - violet rays are very potent and the eyes- and skin should be shield ed from direct exposure when the lamp is in use. It is important, they caution, that the lamp be used only in fixtures that are properly de signed and correctly installed. Fixtures may be obtained from wW'll!' In an infants' ward of a Tor onto hospital, 39 per cent fewer babies developed infections in rooms protected by ultra-violet germicidal units than in those without the lamps. . At The Cradle in Evanston, 111., doctors reported a 90 per cent reduction in the spread of upper respiratory Infection among infants in germicidal equipped cubicles as compared with those in ordinary cubicles. Sterilises Water The lamp is effective for the disinfection or sterilization of water, too. This can be accom plished by the direct application of germicidal energy to the water or as it flows through a tank wherein the depth and rate of flow can be controlled. Thus, it can be applied to ster ilization of small containers of water for surgical and drinking purposes. No taste or odor is added to water by its use. The lamp also can reduce spoilage In the handling and storage of meat., Exposure to the ultra-violet rays reduces bac terial growth on the meat sur face. E Salem, Ore., Dec. 4. U.PJ Salem church goers were left waiting at the curb Sunday morning while city bus drivers staged a sit-down strike because of a grievance against the local manager of the Oregon Motor Stages, V. D. Leek. Drivers claimed that Leek has been domineering and arbitrary in his attitude toward his em ployees. Bus service was re. sumed at 1:15, after the drivers had agreed to submit their grievances to the federal con ciliation board. Bartlttt Phone 24 IS Led Destroyer in Epic ese 5-YEAR BUILDING New York (U.R) A prece-dent- shattering construction boom which will last at least five years is a postwar certainty, according to an internationally known building expert. Harry D. Watts, chairman of the board of James Stewart & Co., international engineers and contractors, says this boom will include schools, bank buildings, hospitals, city structures, homes, factories, parks every kind of building imaginable. He expects that many of these will be built in America, but said that "European demands for reconstruction are already felt here." Scores of orders have accumulated, he declares and surveys indicate that hundreds more are now being planned Missions from Europe are now here, he says, including a seven- man delegation from the French studying proposals to rebuild their once-great ports. "The American construction Industry Is ready to go," Watts said. "If labor will do its share . . . if Washington adopts a hands-off policy, the construction industry will go ahead like greased lightning." HUNT MISSING PLANE Vancouver, B. C, Dec. 4.- (U.R) A search was intensified today for a Royal Canadian Air Force twin-engined flying boat with nine men aboard reported missing over the Straits of Juan de Fuca off Vancouver Island B. Hugh Pruttt Astronomer, General Extension Division, University of Oregon Around 1600 A. D., a German wrote: "Comets are formed by the ascension from the earth, of human sins and wickedness which develop into a kind of gas that is ignited by the wrath of God." Erroneous surely this Teutonic theory, else our night skies would now be sizzling and flaming with the most horrible of these portents of divine in dignition. Conversely, at times when earth's children are most circumspect, such objects span the heavens with long, lumin ous tails, as in 1382 when there appeared the most spectacular comet seen any time during the past 150 years. An attractive painting of this great comet of 1882 was recently presented to the present writer by Mrs. Cora M. Andrews, an artist of Eugene, Ore. Especially prized is this for it was painted by Mrs. Andrews a few weeks ago, shortly before she had reached her 84th birthday. The artist made a copy of a painting done in her younger days when this celestial visitor was a vivid part of her memory of those pre dawn skies above the trees and fences and buildings of snow- covered farmlands in northwest ern Iowa. This splendid comet was of ficially discovered in the day time on September 11, 1882. Al though then very near the sun, its brilliance made It easily visi ble, on September 17, during a few hours' time it crossed the solar disk, remained a little while on the eastern side, then reversed direction and passed be hind the sun to reappear on the western side. During this day. time dash at 300 miles a second, the comet almost grazed the sun. This wild dash around the sun produced terrific strains. A huge sunspot with intense magnetic disturbances appeared Imme diately. The nucleus of the comet's head vas broken Into four pieces which moved on in a lines. But the real grandeur of this magnificent comet became evi dent by late October when it was so far separated from the sun as to be seen in the dark eastern sky before dawn. The filmy tall, widening as It streamed back from the star-like head, extended over a long arc of the heavens and was visible to the unaided eye for six months and three months longer tnrougn telescopes. McCurley, secre tary, reports it has leased ap proximately 22,489 acres of land for grazing purposes, lying in the Camp White military reser vation. Public notice has been published 'warning all persons not members of the association to remove any cattle, horses or sheep now on the land. Approximately 1,080 acres of the leased land are in the Incin erator area, 360 acres in the Igloo area, the balance being in the military reservation. (U.R) Alfalfa, once considered only a feed product for poultry and live stock, has emerged from the ugly duckling class, according to a report by Nebraska's agri cultural college, and now is termed an essential ingredient In baby foods, vitamin pills, breakfast food and candy. Frank w. Bower, national health authority, in his book, "The Business of Eating," advo cates green alfalfa leaves for salads and soups. Only one oth er plant is richer in vitamin A, he said, adding the greens also provide B-complex and vita mins C, D, E, and G. He says that alfalfa currently is used as a bountiful source of vitamin K. A national drug manufacturer classified alfalfa meal with fish meals in vitamin content, and. a candy company advertises its products as containing the glam orized green. According to .an advertise ment by a purveyor of vitamin pills, 14 of 16 body minerals are found in alfalfa, whereas only a portion of these remain in milk produced by alfalfa-fed cows. Prevents' Gray Hair - A manufacturer whose break fast food contains alfalfa leaf meal said carotene in the prod uct prevents gray hair and an author recommended that city dwellers plant six-foot patches of the erst-while forage to in sure a supply of salad greens. He also recommended that the leaves be over-dried for use as tea and in mixtures with other foods. Nebraska agricultural exper imental stations have conducted investigations of alfalfa for the last 40 years., It was only re cently, however, that any check was made of its food and feed possibilities. . . War Ups Prices Wartime demands made growers more conscious of the quality of the plant, college of ficials said. Increased ' needs have upped the price approxi mately $8-$10.50 a ton, and de hyratlng plants sell the meal for about $24-$64 more a ton than previously. Dec. 4, 1944 will necessitate construction additional factories. of Fred Alva Bailey, convicted of first degree murder, with a Jury recommendation of life impris onment, and sentenced to that period last Friday, will be taken to the Salem prison in the next day or two, Sheriff Syd I. Brown reports. Bailey, 27, a San Quen tin prison camp escapee, was tried for the slaying of Ira Clyde Carman last September 3. Bai ley admitted hitting Carman with an auto jack solely for the purpose of robbery, and with no intent to kill. Testimony offered at the trial by the state showed Bailey start ed his crime career when 14 years old In Marlon, Ind., and was involved in several tilts with the law. The sheriff's office reports that since sentence was passed Bailey has been cheerful and is confident of release within six or seven years, judging by let ters.
