(U.F9 Through out the lands ot the Hopi In dians, tribesmen are discussing the possibility that the Snake Clan of Hotevilla village, In Ari zona might die. The Indians, themselves, will continue to live, but the clan appears doomed. The difficulty results from the inability of the clan to select a successor to the snake priest who died two years ago, Just before he was to direct the snake dance ceremony "Che- chuk-ta." If no new priest is chosen, the Snak Clan will die and with it the Snake Dance at Hotevilla. Under tribal tradition the new priest must be either a brother or a nephew of the priest who died two years ago. Three men are eligible, but there are dif ficulties in .naming any one oi them. , One brother has been declar ed ineligible because he has liv ed with white people. A nephew has been ruled out for the same reason. Brother Too 111 That narrowed the choice to one remaining brother, who was selected as priest and accepted the position and then became ill. Because of his illness, he said, he could not take on the arduous duties of snake priest. Also, he reasoned, his illness was a sign that he should not servo In the Important position. If no priest can be named be fore time for the Snake dance the Snake Clan of Hotevilla will die, leaving only two other vil lages Shlpaulvi and Shungo- povi to hold the dance this year as scheduled.
