Christmas Seal Campaign Under Way; "Wipe Out Tuberculosis" Is Message PUBLIC SUPPORT URGED IN EFFORT TO BUILD HEALTH Christmas seals for residents of Jackson county were in the mall today, carrying Into every community the message of the Jackson County Public Health association: "let's wipe out tu berculosis." The first sheets of seals were delivered to Mayor C. A. Meek er by Postmaster Frank De Souza. The mayor then issued the following proclamation, en dorsing the 1944 campaign: "Emphasizing the importance of maintaining health standards in such critical days as these, I wish to urge all people of Med ford to support the work of the Jackson County Public Health association In combating tuberc ulosis by purchasing Christmas seals. "All money obtained from the sale of these little stamps, carry ing the picture, of everybody's The Jackson County Public Health association today an nounced that the annual mailing of Christmas seals has been made so that residents of Jackson county may aid In the fight against tuberculosis. It com memorates the 40th anniversary oi the first Christmas seal sale. which was started by the Danish postal clerk. Both In this country and In Denmark postal employes have always played an important pari in tne campaign. That's one reason why Mrs. Ruth E. Bauer, seal sale chairman, today asked that the public in annreciation be prompt in sending in returns for the Christmas seals. Early mailing of checks will make it easier for the postman. The surgical dressing group of the Red Cross met Friday In stead of Thursdsy. In the four days they have met before this, 1882 dressings have been folded. At the recent city election, James Whipple was elected mayor; E. E. Mrs. Reed Carter, Mrs. James Wiley and Mrs. James Whipple called, on Mrs. Nora Wait of Sardine Creek Friday. The Paul Strahan family and Mr. and Mrs. Phil Strahan en joyed Thanksgiving day as guests of their sister, Mrs. Clair Mathes and family at Talent. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dengler had as their guests Thursday Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Nat B. Hart. Sympathy is extended Tom Wilson whose mother passed away Nov. 1.1 at Central Point. Mrs. Wilson was past 89 years of -age and a pioneer of Oregon. Another Rogue River boy has been honored. Second Lt. Wil liam J. Hughbanks has been awarded the air medal for meri torious achievement in aerial combat. As a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator he has made six bombing missions over Ger many and enemy occupied terri tory. William attended the high school here, and is the son "of Mr. and Mrs. Huehbanks of Wlmer. He has been oversea. since July, 1944. A double funeral was held Nov. 25 at Perl's funeral home for Mr. and Mrs. Harlow C. Mes senger who passed away at Marshfield only four days apart. They were pioneers of Jackson county and had lived for years qn Foots Creek where Mr. Mes senger ran a saw mill. Mr. and Mrs. James Whipple were guests Thursday at the "iiey carter home on Evans Creek. Mr. Hall of Portland Thanksgiving at the home of his mother and husband, Mr. And Mrs. Davis on Cedar street. "Bud" Van Hoy left recently for Portland where he entered the service. Mrs. H. Hart left recently for a visit with a. sister-in-law at Red Bluff. Also going the same days was Mrs. Mae Shults who Oregon 4-H Stat Winners IN recognition of their outstanding 4-H records ef achievement, four Oregon club boys and girls have been named State champions in their respective wartime production and conservation activities, con ducted by the Extension Service. Wilms Lyon (photo 1), 17, of Junction City, won top rating in the National 4-H Clothing Achievement for her 9 year record of making 61 garments in addition to mending, patching and darning. Wilms was county champion in the Style Revues of 1941 and 1943. Her award is provided by the Edu cational Bureau of the Spool Cot ton Company. Dorothy Palmblad (photo 2), 17, of Gresham, is the winner of the 1944 State award in the National 4-H Canning Achievement, pro vided by the Kerr Glass Corp. During 9 years in club work, the girl put up 3,019 jars of meats, vegetables, fruits, soups and jellies, and won many placings on her ex hibits. Including $36.75 in cash prizes. Her estimated value of canned goods on hand is $1,167.95. Merton Bradshaw (photo 3), 19, of Brownsboro, is the winner of the State award in the 1944 Na tional Meat Animal Program pro vided by Thomas E. Wilson, Chi cago. During 9 years in club work the boy handled 34 baby beeves and 9 nogs. He won many plac ing on his meat animal exhibits, including $154, which brought his total income from all project to $5,349.06. Richard Kreni (photo 4), 18, of Silverton, received the 4-H Horn Grounds Beatitification State award, provided by Mrs. Charles Walgreen, Chicago. Among his . home landscaping achievements were planting vegetables lor a Vic tory garden and adding several new flowers and shrubs to his flower garden, in which there sre 43 species. He repaired various things around his home to improve ap pearance of its surroundings. The Clothing and Canning Achievement State winners' awards sre ail expense trips to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, Dee. 34. The Meat Animal and Home Beautification winners receive l7-jewel gold watches.
