SIX MEDrORD MAIL TMBUWB Sunday. Wot. 38. 1844 PINING CAR HELP HELD FOR FRAUD; Los Angeles, Nov. 25 U.R) Indictment and arrest of 13S stewards and waiters for manip ulating $200,000 worth of diiv in ear checks on the Union Pa cific "Challenger" tonight brought a charge that the rail road was using the indictments as an attempt to break wait ers' union. The government accused 23 white stewards and 112 Negro waiters on the Omaha-Los An geles Challenger of serving meals to guests and pocketing the money Instead of turning it over to the railroad. This, said the Indictment, cost the Union Pacific $200,000 a year. Guests paying the pocketed checks didn't lose money, but didn't get all they paid for, fed eral attorneys said, because con spiring cneis maae luua meant for 400 stretch to serve 700. The stewards and waiters were arrested on trains or at their homes in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Chey enne and Omaha the division points where the Challenger stops on its speedy run. They had been indicted secretly yes terday. Most of them were promptly balled out on $1000 each by their unions. " The FBI said the arrests came after three months' investigation by their men and railroad spe cial agents, many of whom dis guised themselves as stewards to see how the asserted fraud worked. But District Secretary Flenold Cunningham of the A. F. L. din ing car waiters' union said that the- indictments were "ridicul ous" and "an attempt of the Union Pacific company to break up the union." The chefs -who stretched the food were mentioned as con spirators but were not in- -it ...j . nu ilnnnn - mAntti the government said was netted in me xraucr was uiviueu uo tween the waiters and stewards, with the chefs getting a small cut, ' ARMOREDALllED 'ft I TIAI A ni TTm rAIKULb BAIItR, i uiimq n mm iiumu ni inuiLn Rome, Nov, 25 U.B-Ad-vane armored patrols' of the British 8th army, smashing fwnnwara against very nerce German resistance, have reach ed the eastern outskirts of Faenza, vital road and commu nications hub on the Rimini Bolna highway, Allied head quarters announced today.
