KIILIN ATTACK' IS STEPPED UP BY J APF0 R C ES Bitter Fighting For Main Fortifications of Former ' Site of American Air Base Chungking, Nov. 10 U.R) Japanese troops are attacking Kweilln with "increased vigor" and are engaged in bitter fight ing with Chinese garrison troops in the main fortifications of the city, Chinese army spokesman said today. (There was no Information from Chungking supporting a Japanese claim that. Kweilln and'Liuchow, once the sites of U. S. air bases 90 miles apart in Kwangsl province, had been "completely captured." Indeed, the Japanese themselves issued confused reports. After an nouncing capture of both cities, Tokyo radio, heard by United Press,- San Francisco, said merely that Kweilin had been encircled" and . that 50,000 Chinese troops were trapped within the city.) The spokesman said the Jap anese were approaching Lieu- chow along a half-dozen routes and had advanced to a point ap proximately 15 miles from the city. At Kweilln, the spokesman said, enemy troops have crossed the Kwei river outside the east gate of the city and are "In bit ter engagement with our main fortifications." (The Kwei river flows at the very edge of the city.) (A Dome! news dispatch, re corded by FCC, said the Japa nese captured Kweilin, capital of Kwangsl province, at noon Friday (Tokyo time) and claim ed the Chinese 31st army had surrendered.) (Tokyo, quoting a dispatch from the "Kweilin front," said later that the fate of 50,000 Chi nese troops In Kwilin "has now been sealed by the complete en clrclement" of the city. "Not a single retreating enemy Is- per mitted to pass through the Jap anese cordon around Kweilin.") A 14th AAF communique re ported bad weather made opera tions impossible in the Kweilin area, but that Maj. Gen. Claire Chennault's P-40S- penetrated the overcast to strafe Poaching alrfied, west of Hengyang, Wed nesday. A Chinese communique yes terday charged the Japanese used poison gas in an attempt to break down Chinese defenses In Kweilin.
