Observations As 1 walked into the ration board office a young chap in uniform was answering a ques tion put to him by Kitty May, the woman at the desk. Kitty May is from Mississippi and is still a lady though now in her second year of active combat service, you might say, on the ration board. That's what a deep south background can do for a woman. All day long the gentle quality of her voice never varies though her answer to the peti tioners for this or that Invari ably is, "We'd be delighted to grant your request but the orA won't allow us to." Yet now Kitty May was play ing the opposite rolo Bnd was asking the questions herself. though gently so, as became a lady from Mississippi. What did the bars on his chest m e a n T And what were the stars for? My, my I You don't say I The young man grew Increas ingly embarrassed as I made his audience a twosome. He, too was from the deep south and was having hard work to live up to traditional chivalry. Finally a faint note of exasperation crept into his voice; he said to the gently insistent Kitty May. No, ma'am, Ah caint tell yo what it was Ah did to get this heah medal. Ah Just calnt; it fusses me!" Bvt by this time I, too, was In- terei'ted. "Young man," I said. looking over the tops of my glasses in what I hoped was a telling grandmotherly fashion "you have the wrong attitude; almost a conceited attitude I might say. You didn't kill those Germans lust for your own per sonal pleasure. We staked you to the venture and we've a right to know by what means you made our investment pay. Take Kitty May, now; she s faced the poison gas of public criticism on the home front and has barged through vocal barrages which would have put many a man on the casualty list. So she has ,the right to know if she got her monpy's worth. "The way we look at It Is this every time one of you boys gets a medal, well a little of it belongs to us and we'd like to know what we got lt for." He was a nice lad and after considering this line of reason ing for a time, he told us some of his experiences. "Now this star means that you and I " and then he'd chuckle. Kitty May says she has more heart for her battle on the home front aft er hearing how well she's doing overseas. BIRD ASKS 'HOW'S TRTCKS? Chicago (U.R) Stepping to me porcn ot his home, Sgt.
