Tonsillotomy means merely slicing off, clipping, removing part of the tonsil, by means of the Instrument called tonsil lotome which does the trick with a quick snick and even without a whiff of ether or laughing gas hurts rather less than extracting a loose baby tooth. Tonsillotomy Is the only surg ery I would advise or sanction In any case of tonsil andor ade noid hypertrophy except rare instances of malignancy. And I believe Ive heard all the quaint arguments and ingenious theo ries advanced by the advocates of "complete removal" of ton sils in such cases. ' ' For children over six year of age electro-coagulation'- (dia thermy) in the hands of phy sician skilled in the technique, is the alternative to tonsillot omy. Three or four sittings at weekly . intervals "will bring about sufficiant shrinkage of the enlarged tonsils, as a rule. Of course this is slower, more expensive than tonsillotomy. But it is bloodless and safe. Equally bloodless and safe Is X-ray treatment. Tobln of In dlanapolis, Its president and edt tor of the union publication "The International Teamster." The officers are Lt. Cmdr James H Suddcth, Washington, and Lt. Randolph Dlcklns, Jr., now in Bradenton, Fla., with his wife and child. The suits charged that an article In a November Issue of "The International Teamster" falsely accused the officers of drunkenness, attacks on union members and using violent pro fane language against the presi dent of the United States follow ing Mr. Roosevelt's Sept. 23 ad dress to the Teamsters. The suits said the latter charge, if true, would subject the officers to court-martial end probable dis honorable discharge . from the navy. Weber, 319 Laurel, recently received an in-1 teresting letter from Sgt. West, G. Williams from the Italian theater of war. Sgt. Williams was formerly stationed at Camp White. I He writes that he Is fighting; with the Fifth Army and has been overseas six months, i He states that it is hard for him to conceive the ruthless waste of life that war brings on. , Sgt. Williams writes that Italy Is a country wrn and marred by the ravages of war. Her peo ple have a tired look, their clothes are worn and many of them hava no shoes. - He said everything in Italy seems to be disorganized; the people find It difficult to reconstruct them selves and scarcely know which way to turn. He wrote that the Italian farmers have a pitiful tale to tell of the way they were mis treated by the Germans, who looted thel,' farms and homes in the retreat, leaving them prac tically nothing. But the' farmers and villagers seem happy to be out from under German and Fascist domination, the letter said.- - Italian women, writes Sgt. Williams, are considered slaves and bearers of children. He claims to have seen women and young girls working in fields while men sat in the shade and talked. Farm methods, he said, are primitive. Sanitary methods, it was said, are not nearly as developed as in the poorest rural areas of America. Sgt, Williams feels that the large amount of wine consumed by the Italians keeps them healthy. r . , There is a great ' deal to be done there after the war, wrote the sergeant, stating that nearly every, house has a shell hole or has been struck by a bomb. He stated that the many towers on the beautiful churches were used as observation - towers by the enemy and as a result have been heavily pounded by allied artillery. " .Me told of going to a house to seek shelter and of hearing noises within. He, with his three companions, surrounded the house and ordered the occu-. pants to come out. To their sur prise, nine German soldiers sur rendered and were happy to be prisoners. Sgt. Williams expressed his appreciation for the many fine times at the Weber home and for the chlckei dinners which he enjoyed there. He stated that he hopes to see them soon again. P.-T.A.
