ANDERSON, Guardian. WAC WRITES OF DESTRUCTION AT CITY OF CASS1N0 George W.- Swinney, Eagle Point, recently received a letter from a WAC, member of the Signal Section, stationed some where in Italy. She has been overseas for more than. 14 months, ten months of which were served tn Africa, She writes of the hardships encount ered by her unit but states they have nothing to complain about compared to the boys at the front. The letter follows: Dear George: "I only wish that those who complain ot inconveniences at home could see Casstno utter destruction ot a whole town, Nothing left but ruins and most ot those only a piie ot rubble. But the people are back! Nothing was left, but it Is still their home so they returned. "They camp there under the ruins or, beside them despite mines and booby traps and des pite the drenching downpours and the mud. What they eat or how they live, I don't know. "There is a stillness ot death over Cassino not the peaceful silence of Pompei, but a brood ing ghostly silence that envelops the place like a shroud, and yet It must have been a pretty town It was nestled against the hill In a tiny green valley with the monastery above it, but now tt Is a shattered corpse, "Its not a pleasant placewtth lonely graves of Germans or Ital ians and sometimes English scat tered here and there along the road (the Americans have been removed to one ot our ceme teries) and the twisted and dis carded, equipment lining the roads not pleasant at all ut, there are people in America who should see It and feel its ghostly silence and feel the death that still lurks there overhanging all. "They should see the foxholes filled with scum and slime and the rotting gun emplacements. They might then understand that war means dtth in one ot its most horrible forms. . . "They should look at the stumps of trees with their limbs and foliage completely stripped by gunfire and shrapnel and they might realize what it was to have fire so thick that no shrubs re main and trees were thus shred, ded. . . . "Unfortunately, the papers and films tend to glamorize war some civilians should' visit our hospitals and see our casualties! "There is - nothing glorious about war it is all horror and hate but too many people at home dose their eyes to that. "We in tha rear echelons are in very little, it any, danger, while we may have to do with out a few things and are a trifle inconvenienced In a few others, we are really very well oft and have no cause to complain. "It is different with the men at the front. Besides the grave danger always facing them, they must live in the open where they are subject to. drenching ratn and cold winds, they are always soaked and it often freezes at night, "Our rations call for six packs ot cigarettes week (since I do not smoke I send mine to my cousin at the front) and the boys at the front ere lucky if they get three packs. We eat C and K rations but ours are served hot and are usually camouflaged with any fresh vegetables we may be able to get. They at the front eat theirs plain and cold from the can. Not I can't com plain at all about what we have," CARD Or THANKS Wa wish to thank our friends for their kindnesses and beautiful flowers sent u durinf our recent bcreavw ment. Sunday, I EV Williams, Sectr, FOOD CROP GOALS HIGHER THAN 1944 10 BE ADVOCATED Washington, Nov, S U. The war food administration is expected to recommend to the states sometime this month 1945 food and fiber crop goals total ing 383,000,000 acres, or 4,000, 000 more than the acreage planted this year. The overall goal for 1944 was set at 371,000,000 acres. While formers have fallen slightly short of this mark; production nevertheless is expected to ex ceed any previous year. WFA will ask farmers to con tinue "all out" food production again In 1945 because, despite the expected end of the Euro pean war, military demands will continue at high levels, some food will be needed tor relief feeding and war-padded civilian pocKelbooks will purchase more food than was available this year. Need Sugar Beats Greatest recommended In crease will be for sugar beets. Farmers will be asked to boost this year's 848,000 acres by 30 per cent. The largest cat will be a 40 pap cent slash in dry pea acreage, already announced. Corn acreage for 1945 hat been the subject of considerable controversy, but WFA probably will recommend the same as this year'!) 99,000,000 acres. Wheat acreage already ha been announced at 2,000,000 acres above 1944, and rye acre age also has been increased somewhat. WFA expects to ask slight reduction for grain sor ghums, but to suggest that oats and barley plantings remain at the same level as this year.
