rOtTH MIDfOHD MAIL TItlBUIfS Thursday Hot. t, ItU THREE COUNTIES Salem, Ore., Nov. 2 U.R) The largest gains In Oregon war time payrolls were recorded in Jefferson, Tillamook and Curry counties, the state unemploy ment compensation commission reported today. This record gain w a s in spite of Multnomah's gain of nearly four times its pre war figure in 1943, which was more than twice the amount of covered payrolls for the entire state in 1940. Jefferson county was reported as having a payroll of $1,243, 661, for 1943, or 677 per cent above 1940. Tillamook's covered payrolls jumped 384 per cent between 1940 and 1943, from $1,934,069 to $8,772,426 last year, whilo Curry county's jump was more than 100 par cent in the one year 1942-43 alone, going to $1,059,798. A 49.2 per cent gain was made in covered payrolls in Multnomah county b et w e e n 1942 and 1943, or 299.7 per cent over the 1940 figure. FIVE MEN KILLED" AS ' ENGINE STRIKES CAR Gooding, Idaho, Nov. 2 U.R) Five men, including the son-in-law of the Gooding chief of po lice, were killed today when a Union Pacific engine struck their sedan at a crossing west of the Gooding depot. Killed were Oscar Mai, 32, son-in-law of G. A. Ralney. Three members of the board resigned In protest. The regents, angered ' by Rainey's recent statement charg ing them with 16 acts which he said were "repressive meas ures," hampering his adminis tration at the university, in Austin, Tex., discharged him as unco-operative. The dispute was touched off when one regent ac cused Ralney of making too many speeches before religious organizations.
