Non-pivotal states Roosevelt, Late October samples of voter preference show no change in several states and small gains for Dewey in several others. These gains cannot be consider ed conclusive. They are signifi cant principally because they in dicate that Dewey seems to have prevented his opponent from in creasing his early lead to a posi tion ol clear-cut advantage. The margin shown for Roosevelt at the start of this series of articles would not permit much defec tion without the possibility of losing the election. That margin has not been widened, and the results In the remaining states to be reported on may show ii to- have narrowed slightly. In the preceding article, no change was shown In the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Wyoming. A gain for Roosevelt was Indicat ed in Michigan, Single-point gains were shown to West Vir ginia and Oregon. Nevada fluc tuated one point toward Dewey and Idaho two points toward Roosevelt. Of the states reported today, Delaware, Maryland, Illi nois and Missouri show single point or two-point gains for Dewey. New Jersey, Oklahoma. Kentucky and Minnesota show no change. In Colorado, more in- tensive sampling since Septem ber now establishes definite tad for Dewey, taking the state out of the pivotal group. Fluctuations of one or two points in sampling operation are to be expected purely from the laws of chance.
