100-Foot Flagpole
To Be Dedicated To
Battleship Oregon
Portland, Ore., Oct. 27 U.R
A giant flagpole 100 feet high
today stood on the spot to be
dedicated Sunday to the mem
ory of the historic battleship
Oregon and the veterans of the
Spanish war.
The pole is a 110-foot Douglas
fir, weighing about 2'. 4 tons.
Nearby workmen moved Into
place a four-ton Rocky butte
stone on which the plaque and
the figurehead of the Oregon
will be mounted. The surround
ing area has been landscaped
for a perpetual park.
The old battleship was a state
shrine on the Portland water
front until the early days of the
present war, when federal of
ficials asked that it be scrapped
for the metal it contained.
An Investigation was made
several months ago into charges
that the scrap had not been used
in the war effort, when the hull
was found moored in the Colum
bia river. It was determined that
some of the metal had been sold
to government agencies, with a
large amount remaining unused.
