Jackson school last year had the largest Parent-Teacher as sociation membership In the city as well as In the state In comparison to enrollment. This fact amounts to little, but the effects of such co-operation amounts to much. There was a very low per centage of failures In all grades and we had the highest percent age on the health honor roll. The April Frolic was the most successful to date, the summer round-up was very effective, a "daddies' banquet" was enioyed and nine enthusiastic P.-T. A. assemblies were held as well as several pupil programs. For those who wish to Join the association there Is much Interesting work to do and an enthusiastic program ahead. Continuing the reasons for P.-T. A. membership, the ninth and tenth follow: 9. We want to do something practical to help win this war, so that we can go back to nor mal living. Nothing In the world Is more essential than working for the welfare of childhood and youth, so that when the war Is won we shall have a fine, sturdy generation to carry on. 10. Babson Babson Park, Mass., Oct. 27 (Specinl Correspondence) Those who follow the market closely know that the insurance stocks are about the only group that has not gone up in price during the past six months. The industrialists are strong based upon postwar prospects; the railroads are strong based upon huge temporary earnings; the public utilities are strong based upon the hopes that Dewey will be elected; while other groups are more or less following the leaders with the exception of the insurance stocks. These have been dull since the Su- preme Court decision of a few months ago. This decision may not hurt the larger direct writ ing fire companies nor the well operated re-Insurance com paniej, but it could knock the present agency system galley west. Up to the present time, the insurance agents of most states have controlled the in surance business. Their honey moon is apparently over. Different Kinds ot Insurance Compared All kinds of Insurance com panies are more or less fearful of government interference in this country. In foreign coun tries the insurance industry has been one of the first to be taken over by the socialistic govern ments. So many people are af fected by insurance that it has been a popular industry for politicians to seek lower rates. Some economists claim that the cost of selling insurance could materially be reduced under government ownership. In the case of fire companies, this might be done by adding the Insurance premium to the tax bill, based upon the amount that the property is assessed. In the case of accident insurance, the premium could be deducted from the wage envelope; while life insurance will come more land more under social security rcrsonnlly, I believe that these things may come some day but need not be taken seriously at this time. Besides, there always will be an opportunity for pri vate companies to sell "excess Insurance" excess fire, burg lar, accident, life and certainly casualty. Inflation Bugaboo For Insurance Lino It Is not Supreme Court de cisions or government opera tions which I fear but rather inflation. Inflation could ma terially hurt life insurance com panies. It is true that they can pay out the same dollars that they take in, but they have con tracted to make these payments based upon certain operating expenses. In the case of non participating Insurance c o m panics, these operating expenses could gradually increase, due to Inflation, without the direct ! ' ... "'""I companies having any, I means nf Inrrpncincr fhair In. come. ' When a life Insurance com-; pany took a contract forty years : ago on a young map at twenty years of age the company as-' sumed that conditions would re main the same until the man flnnlly died. Up to the present time, better health methods 1 have been reducing death rates, These have offset, temporarily, these Increased expenses and decreased Interest rates. If In flation docs not come and Inter est rates soon again Increase, these life Insurance companies have little to fear; but other wise, look out. Fire Company Stocks Are Beit Fire insurance companies are not subject to these handicaps : as their rates can be re-adjusted every one, three or five years according to the length of the outstanding policies. This Is al so true of most accident and health policies. Frankly, I pre-, fcr the stocks of good fire and accident insurance companies to those of life companies and health companies. Some other week I will discuss casualty j companies; but this is a subject : by Itself. HEED MONEY? These are running today greater than they have been for years. Coupled with these) losses are the unjustified cuts in rates by the insurance de partments of certain states. These rates should be raised in stead of lowered. The increased fire losses are due to "poor housekeeping, untrained em ployees and the inability of fira chiefs to get the needed equip ment." Therefore, next week I shall say a word to your City Fathers as to the immediata need for installing more firs alarms, buying more fire equip ment and making their depart ments more efficient Just as sooa as possible before the big infla tion comes around 1950.
