URGENT CALL FOR VOLUNTEER NURSE AIDES IS ISSUED Pointing to an urgent call by tho National Nursing Council for war service for more women to perform "unselfish and Irre placeable" work of the Volun teer Nurse's Aide, Mrs. Don Newbury, chairman of Nurse's Aides of the Jackson County Red Cross chapter, today said ! that more volunteers are needed in this community. Many army wives who were serving as Nurse's Aides have recently transferred to other lo calities, leaving openings for new volunteers. Several young women of college age also have now returned to their duties In the classroom and ore serving elsewhere as nurse's aides. Mrs Newbury said maximum service by women trained as nurse's' aides is needed now as never before. She urged also that untrained women call the local chapter, telephone 4405 to enroll for the next training class. Date for this class will de pend upon enrollment and as soon as a full class is obtained definite plans will be an nounced. It is hoped tho new class can begin early in Novem ber. Since July 1941, a total of 145,000 nurse's aides have been trained. About 10,000 now are in training. These are the wo men, who must "hold tho line" on tho home front, according to a statement received here from Mrs. Elmira B. Wickendon, ex ecutive secretary of tho Nation al Nursing Council. Mrs. Don Newbury released this statement from the letter of Mrs, Wickendon to state and lo cal nursing councils for war service: "Will you appeal to every Nurse's Aid In your community to hold the line? Tell her that she has received valuable train Ing, that hospitals and patients alike have learned to depend on her, that the shortage o! nursing personnel and other personnel is still acute, that as casualties overseas mount, and as hospitals abroad and at home require more skilled nursing care for more of the wounded, tho way for her to serve best Is to con tinue doing the work for which she has been tralnd and if possible to work longer hours." The situation In hospitals throughout the country Is seri ous, Mrs. Newbury said, adding that, "women must not allow over-optimism about the war, personal Inclinations and vaca tions to overcome their will to serve." SI 0,ive mi Barber's Observations A curiosity about human be haviour I've never been able to satisfy is why two people, both fine and worthwhile in every re spect, can meet for the first time and experience an instant antagonism toward each other. And when you feel that way, you can count on thii . . . the hackles on the other fel low's neck are also erecting. Sometimes, feeling ashamed of my lack of self-control In this, I've deliberately cultivated a closer acquaintanceship for wnicn i naa little appetite. I've always regretted It. My best bet, if we're both to be happy, Is to avoid all but the most cas ual contacts. Deflating to the ego but true just the same is the knowledge that I bring out the worst In such a one, even as he or she does in me. I've sometimes had to avoid certain people not be cause of anything they'd do or say might not be acceptable In polite society, but for what they had the power to make me do or say. But I'd still like to know the "why" of this reaction. Is It chemical? Or Is there a chem istry of the spirit? Or since wa can't possibly have time for bo many friendships," is this Just nature's way of removing some of us from the lives of others of us! Members of my family say they instantly know my reac tion to a new acquaintance. This truly bothers me. "It shows a lack of poise a quality we all admire and struggle for. Tho younger son once made mo more sorrowful than he knew, saying, "When we're with some one I see you don't care for, I feel I'm sitting on a keg of dy namite. I watch vour fnp anrl' Just pray I can get you away etore you pull something." There was no humor in this for me. I felt ft tn hn mu ne ttle most severe charges ever made against me that my lack of poise should bring distress to my son, i know that poise is the fruit of culture. Yet culture hat a confusing number of faces. You and I may know many things about the arts; what fork to use may be a push over for us;-yet the final gift of a true culture are poise and serenity. Some day, maybe I but cer tainly not yet. Sgt. MCulloch of Ashland Attached To Mustang Group An Eighth Air Force Fighter Station, England Staff Sgt. Donald J.
