So the chances of an average little guy like the Junco ever making a sp'sh nre Just aloout nil. His only claim to the "very" classi fication is that he is very com mon; also very much neglected by authors of bird books for after a cool nod acknowledging that he does exist, they pass on to the hnndsomes, the colorfuls, the sweet singers. I'm aware of him this morn ing because the first real rain fell during the night. Locally, the first rain sends the Juncos pouring down out of tho hills. Their whlto lateral tail feathers give them a sort of bouncing flight. If tho day is gloomy, their neutrally colored bodies can scarcely be seen so that only the white vees of their outer toil feathers show. So it was this morning and I had the illu sion of a horde of slender winged butterflies in agitated escape from something. The Junco Isn't agitated a bit; he Just likes to go bumpety-bump through the air and so docs. I can truly say Juncos hove given me more real entertain ment at tho feeding table than any other winter visitor. The toneless, piping chatter of the individual Junco Isn't so much, but multiply this by 75 or 100, as happens shortly after day light each winter morning, and I rush the grub. Seldom more than 20 feed ot a time. I like to attribute to their nice regard for the other fellow's rights the fact that they feed only for a minute or so, then fly to a near hush, their places being taken by another 20 or so. If I don't respond to their first demand for food, a defi nitely querulous noto comes In to their calls. This Is not imagi nation on my part. Members of the family recognize the differ ence yet none of us is able to describe tho change. A black-headed, gray-bodlcd bird, having a flesh colored bill and white-edged tall notice him a little more this winter. But don't start feeding him un less you mean to keep It up.
