KILLS60 JAPS Big Oregon Marine Stick; Gun Muzzle in Bunker Fire Slits, Mows Enemy Down. By Staff. Sgt, Jeramlsh A. O'Leary of Washington, D. C. Marine Corps Combat Correspondent (Distributed by United Press) Peleliu, Pauau Islands (De layed) Marine Pfc. Arthur J. Jackson, 200 pounds of one-man gang from Portland, Or., killed more than 60 Japs here in a sin gle day of fighting. He rolled up the Impressive total while his platoon was at tacking Jap defense positions on the southern end of the island. In eight hours, the platoon de stroyed or neutralized 40 Jap strongholds, Jackson single handcdly accounting for 15 of them. Technique Simple His technique was simple: With or without covering fire, he charged the Jap bunkers, placed the nuzzle of his Brown ing automatic rifle in the fire slits or observation apertures and sprayed the interior. If the desperate enemy tried a- dash for safety, Jackson was ready. "He mowed 'em down in windrows," one marine de scribed it. In all, the big Oregonian ex pended more than 2,000 rounds of Browning automatic ammuni tion during the day. So fast did he work that men ordinarily . assigned to carrying ammuni tion for machine guns were set to bringing up ammunition for him. Known as "Bull" Jackson, known as "bull" to follow marines because of hij size and tremendous strength, climaxed his one-man-gang per formance a few days later when, armed only with a splintered rifle stock, he clubbed to death a Japanese soldier who attacked him with grenades and bay onet. The Portland marine was in his foxhole when the Jap and a companion charged him. Ha killed the first enemy soldier with a burst from his Browning, but the second threw a grenade, which shattered the rifle. Jackson dodged the Jap's bay onet, grabbed his opponent by the neck and battered him to the ground with the stock of the broken rifle. A native of Nome, Alaska, Jrckson also saw action at Cape Gloucester, New Britain. Cluslns time tor Sunday Too Late to ciasair, s 80 Saturday afternoon- riaaaa rememDer.
