"'' RELIEF CLOTHING Now Ready With New From one troop in 1927, the Medford Girl Scouts organiza tion has grown until now the council takes In Medford, Jack sonville, Central Point, Phoenix and all rural school districts In the Immediate vicinity. MemDer hin consists of Brownie troops, Intermediate and senior scouts. The senior Scouts have develop ed a flourishing wing Scout pro gram this past year. The na tional goal for membership of a "million or more by '44" has been achieved, and of that total Medford Girl Scouts had as an aim, 600 memberships. Activities of the senior Scouts Include, in addition to the wing Scout program, working as vol unteers In local hospitals, assist ing at the airport canteen and at the Medford day nursery Younger Scouts sell defense stamps, deliver posters for com munity organizations, work with the Junior Red Cross in making articles for the Camp White hos pital and carry on other pro jects. Badge work which the girls may select Included home nursing, child care, citizenship, community service, housekeep ing, cooking and gardening. Get together events are held for each age group during the year to foster friendships. Sponsor Day Camp In addition to the group ac tivities carried on by the various Irops, the local council sponsors a day camp for three days each week during Juno which is open to every girl in this section and In August each year, two weeks of established camping, Includ ing bonting, swlmmlnng, horse back riding, crafts and skills and outdoor sports of many types, Is held at the Lake O'Woods. The various troops have as leaders, local women who are trained In group work, troop programs and child guidance by the council executive secretory. It is pointed out by the Girl Scout leaders that tho organiza tion Is international and that it Is considered one of the coun try's outstanding character building groups for girls. In the organization there Is no dis crimination against race, religion or politics. Any girl may become a member. Entire operating deficit of the Medford Girl Scouts program Is underwritten by the Medford Community Chest and War Fund, The 1944 campaign for funds for the 36 agencies, local, state and national, so supported or assisted, begins here October The Medford Ministerial As sociation will participate in the national appeal through the collection of clothing for the churches for the emergency relief of the needy In the Euro pean' liberated areas, It was de cided Tuesday at the first reg ular meeting of the new year under its new president, the Rev. Fred M. Weatherford. A centrally located collection center for the clothing is being selected and announcement will be made in the near future as to type of clothing desired and the place to bring same. The ministers have asked the Coun cil of Church Women to assist in the project. Special guest at the meeting was Arthur M. Cannon, choir man of the Medford Community Chest committee, who summar ized the needs and goals of the committee for the coming year and urged the support and co operation of the local ministers in presenting the cause from the pulpit. Tentative plans for the an nual union Thanksgiving Day service were discussed and it was decided to hold the meet ing this year in the Presbyter ian Church, the speaker to be announced later. The Rev. Sgt. Wayne Fair child recently visited his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Fair child of route 1 In the Griffin Creek district. He left Sunday to report to Lincoln, Neb,, for re assignment. Sgt. Fairchild, mechanic. In the air corps, saw duty In the North African, Tunisian, Sicilian and Italian campaigns. He holds' th soldier's medal, good conduct medal the European-Asiatic cam-1 palgn ribbon, a unit citation and the American defense medal, i The sergeant has been In the army since January of 1941 and is to have advanced training following his reassignment. WAVES Told Basis Of Overseas Call Washington. Oct. B (U.R) The navy announced today that WAVE officers and enlisted per onnel cU-slrlng overseas assign ments will be selected on the basis of length of service and past military record. The navy said that no quotas of women for overseas assign ments will be made before De cember.
