LOCAL and Fined Rodriguez S. Rodri guez, Mexican, was lined $10 Tuesday in city court on a charge of drunkenness. Pltti Leaves Pfc. Harry S. Pitts left Sunday for his station, Buckley Field, Denver, Colo., after a 12-day furlough spent in Medford. with his mother, Mrs. Almeda Budge, Route 1. Directors To Meet A meet ing of Y. M. C. A. directors will be held at the "Y" hall at 5:15 p. m. tomorrow, it was an nounced today by Dr. B. R. Elliott, chairman of the board. Cases Reported Only two cases of communicable diseases, one case of measles and one of ,f rheumatic fever, were reported to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county health officer, for the week end ing Sept. 22. The measles case is in the Medford district and the rheumatic fever in Ashland, the report shows. Cans Received A shipment of 500 tin cans to be used for shipping perishable foods over seas to servicemen has been re ceived at the office of the home demonstration agent in the courthouse it was announced today. The cans, No. 2Vi in size, have been unavailable for several days, the demand hav ing exceeded original supplies. The cans may be secured at the office at cost and then returned after filling for sealing. Home On Leave Mordaunt Moulton, seaman 1-c in the U.S. Navy, arrived in Medford Tues day night where lie will spend . his leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allison Moulton, 26 Western Ave. Sea man Moulton arrived in New York two weeks ago after spending 18 months at sea. Dur ing that time his ship docked at Indian, Australian and Afri can ports. Seaman Moulton is to report to San Francisco on Oct. 10. Stamp On Sale The special stamp commemorating the bat tles of Bataan and Corregidor Just Issued by the postal depart ment will go on sale at the Med ford postoffice tomorrow, ac cording to Frank DeSouza, post master. The stamp is of 3-cent denomination and the size of an air-mail stamp. It is the first stamp issued on the theme of the United States' participation in the present war and pictures part of the shoreline of Cor regidor. If Commissioned Clayton S. T1 Jacobsen, formerly of Medford, is in a class of pilots to be grad uated from the Altus army air field, Liberal, Kan., tomorrow, according to information re ceived by friends here. Lt. Ja cobsen was formerly a salesman for the Fuller Brush company here and the family resided at 1304 Reddy avenue. Mrs. Jacob son and their son, Craig, are in v Kansas with Lt. Jacobsen. The Jacobsen left Medford in Aug ust of 1943. - e Sergeant Returning T. Set. Joe Earley, Jr., arrived in New York Tuesday after two and one-half year's duty in Great Britain with the army air corps. The sergeant phoned his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Earley, Sr., of the Holland Hotel, last , evening and said that he would V be home in a few days. This is Sgt. Earley's first extended leave since going to England. He has been doing clerical work for an army air corps fighter unit in England. At Jacksonville Mrs. J. L. Mitchell of Alameda, Calif., and her sister, Mrs. Tim Loftus of Loftus, Calif.,' have returned to Medford and are visiting in Jacksonville with Mrs. Mitch ell's mother-in-law, Mrs. Martha Mitchell. Mrs. J. L. Mitchell's husband, Chief Petty Officer J. L. Mitchell USN, is in Ala meda awaiting new orders and Sgt. Tim Loftus is with the U.S. army in France. Mrs. J. L. Mitchell was formerly employed on the Mail Tribune. To Enter School Miss Jean Steele will leave the latter part of this week for Eugene where she will enroll in the University of Oregon law school. Miss Steele recently resigned as United States commissioner for the Crater Lake Park service In order to enroll again in the university where she took a de gree in economics several years ago. Miss Steele has made her home at Cargill Court and has been an active member of the Medford branch of the Ameri can Association of University Women. Chinese Customs Topic of Talk At Rotary Meeting The habits and customs of the Chinese people were the subject of an address by Ben H. Schmidt, Medford's new YMCA director, before the Medford Rotary club Tuesday. Speaking at the Hotel Medford, Schmidt suggested the question of whether the people of this country should criticise the seemingly primitive manners and ways of the Chinese cus toms whioh have been employed in the Orient for thousands of tyears. The speaker questioned the long-range advantages of our hectic mode of living contrasted with the slower, quieter and oft en happier life of the Chinese. The food, apparel and religion of the Chinese were described by the new YMCA director whose experience in social work in Asia extended over 10 years.
