LITTLE I CRATED CAST Charles Laughton, Robert Young Co-Star; "Cover Girl" on Holly Screen. With a starring trio of Charles Laughton, little Margaret O'Bri-,-en and Robert Young and a sto ry adapted from Oscar Wilde's celebrated tale, "The Canterville Ghost," comes to the Craterian theater today. It is a whimsical picture, full of delightful humor and warm dramatic situations which all the family can enjoy. Brought up to date by Edwin Harvey Blum in an excellent and exciting script, "The Canterville Ghost" tells of a ghost (played by Laughton) who, because of cowardice in a duel during his life, has been forced to roam the broad halls of his English castle for more . than 300 years. Not until one of his descendants performs an act of bravery In his name will he be rid of the curse and able to return to rest forever. Margaret O'Brien, one of the most talented youngsters In the entire history of the theater and the movies, plays the youngest descendant Lady Jes sica de Canterville, who be comes hostess to a platoon of American Ransers billeted in the old castle during the pres-l ent war. GIRL ACQUITTED Mercer, Pa., Sept. 23 (U.R) Janice Graham, 21 -year -old Mercer county farm girl, was I acquitted today of charges that she killed two women and a ' man on the farm of her employ er near here last Oct. 7. The girl had been charged with the slaying of Mrs. Helen Wilson, 48; Mrs. Catherine Wilson, 78, and Robert McKay, 61, a fpllow hand on the Everett N. Wilson farm, where she was employed. The women victims were the wife and mother of the farm owner, now a navy seabee. The picture that set a new standard in motion picture en tertainment. "Birth of a Na tion," D. W. Griffith's great masterpiece, comes to the Rialto theater today for three days. Historically correct, in every detail, "Birth of a Nation" has been lauded for its accuracy in depicting Lincoln's assassina tion, the baptism of the Confed erate flag at Bull Run, the form ing of the Ku Klux Klan, Sher man's march to the sea and, sur prisingly, Lincoln's signing of! the first federal law drafting men into the armed forces of the United States. The roaring rides of the ghost 1" Klan bring thrills to the to move both young and d the shivering notes of .tgle calling the white-clad Klansmen to the fiery cross are considered among the most spine-tingling of all motion pic ture sequences. "Birth of a Nation" was adapted from the story "The Clansman," written by an em battled southerner and former clergyman Griffith, whose fath er, Jocab Wark Griffith, was a colonel in the 1st Kentucky Cav alry, took Dixon s story and! added to it those he as a child had heard his father tell In the prologue, Griffith tells Walter Huston his many reasons for producing the picture and gives many Interesting highlights on the production of this great epic. As a special added attraction on the same program, the Rial to will have "The Eagle vs. The Dragon," an engrossing story of nature mat was given prom inent mention in the Saturday Evening Post last year. A picnic will be served in the Elks Temple at noon and those attending will bring a baskets lunch. A business meeting will follow in the afternoon. MEDFORO HIGH TO HAVE CAP UNIT IF STUDENTS DESIRE Medford high school has been approved for a unit in the Ci vilian Air Patrol organization and City School Superintend ent E. H. Hedrlck stated Saturday that one may be formed here if students are sufficiently inter ested. Decision to approve the local high school as a unit fol lowed a conference Wednesday between Hedrick, Lester Harris, principal of the high school and Major Charles T. Haas, execu tive officer of the Civilian Air Patrol of Portland. CAP Is an auxiliary branch of the army air force but not a part of the army proper. Hed rick explained that the aim of the government, In this connec tion, is to build a greater in terest oh the part of the high school students in civilian fly ing after the war and give as much aid and encouragement to this as possible. For Boys and Girls Membership in the unit Is open to both boys and girls be tween the ages and 15 and 18. Several of these units are now in operation in the state. Many of the courses required for CAP are now offered at the high school but these will be enlarged and regular high school credit given for them at the rate of one unit for each year's work. Some of the courses include: Physical exer cise and military drill, aircraft identification, theory of flight, meteorology, map reading, first aid, and morse code. Students who have already taken any of these courses may receive cred its for them when they enroll in the unit.
