PLEDGE IS NOT Giving children the pledge against smoking and drinking may not be scientific, but I be lieve it is a powerful pre ventive meas ure against such indul gence in child h o o d and youth. N e a rly al ways the first experience of a child and by child I mean a minor, an individual who has not yet attained adult growth and development, the capacity to mpport himself, the degree of Intelligence or Judgment re quired to qualify him to vote or to serve in the armed forces the first adventures in smok ing or drinking are Just the child's way of "showing off", taking a dare or proving he or she is not afraid or that he or she is not unsophisticated. If the others in the group, gang or party are smoking or drinking the child, invited to have a moke or a drink, simply hasn't enough character to decline he or she finds It much easier to take a smoke or a drink, espe cially if no one has made a ser ious endeavor to teach the child why he or she should not take that first smoke or drink. The school teacher who asked me to give scientific reasons why boys should not begin moking when they are fifteen years old. I can't. Best I can do is to give my opinion that it Is harmful in every way to a boy to begin smoking before he has attained adult growth and development and the capacity to support himself or to serve In the armed forces. I never understood clearly whether mother had scientific reasons for her stand, but at her request I gave her my pledge not to use tobacco or alcoholic beverage or liquor before I was 21, and I kept the pledge. Mitscher's Car rier off Philippines, Sept. 13- (Via navy radio) (U.PJ Our fighters and bombers peeled off on the island of Cebu yesterday shortly after dawn. Below them the Jap was a man in a hurry. His gassed up planes on two packed airfields were taking off upwind and downwind, his ships were haul ing anchor.. Faint dots of smoke in the sky denoted ack-ack. But it was far too late. The hoarse whine of Hellcat fighters diving out of the high overcast drowned out the futile sputts of the Zeros on the runways and there was Just the faintest trace of wakes from moving ships in the harbor. Smoke Veils Isle Today the enemy Is immobil ized. -Black smoke shrouds the island with its littered wreckage of aircraft, its gutted ships and docks, and the still burning oil tanks. The carrier-based planes from this task force visited spec tacular destruction on Cebu, once a pleasant little port of call for ships plying between Luzon and Mindanao. Ccbu's racetrack and the big white administration building known as "The Sultan's Palace were left untouched. So was 'Osmena fountain" in the civic plaza. But not much was left of the harbor and its oil depots. The Asiatic Petroleum com pany's area covering two blocks was levelled and fires raged over its properties warehouses and wharfs once owned by Ameri can oil companies. 100 Ships In Harbor While fighters patrolled over head, American dive bombers and torpedo bombers peeled off endlessly on the airfields and Cebu harbor. There were about 100 ships in the harbor ranging from sampans to large cargo ves sels of 10,000 tons or more. More than 25 vessels were de stroyed and many damaged, while at nearby Lahug and Mac- tan airfields more than 120 planes were destroyed on the ground and nearly 75 in the air. Zeros moved down the run ways, but only a handful got more than a few hundred feet Into the air before they were shot down. Bombers started to take off, changed their minds and ran off the runways Into clumps of trees; their pilots slithered out and took to the woods one Jump ahead of the strafing Hellcats. Our first fighter sweep return ed to the ship after shooting down 14 planes in the air and destroying another 18 on the ground and figuratively speak ing bearing blond, slight Lt. By shooting down four planes he raised his total to five in the air in the past four days of attacks on the Philippines. He also destroyed five planes on the ground. It was a Just reward for this carrier's pilots who had looked for enemy planes from the Bon ins to Palau and Mindanao with out much srecess. Squadron Leader Cmdr. Hugh Winters, of Annapolis, said, "When we came down out of the clouds I Just couldn't believe my eyes. There were 90 planes on the ground."
