FOR I Screaming Mimis and Burp Guns Described By Lt. Paul Hoyme In Letter To Aunt and Uncle Here Phoenix, Sept. 15 Phoenix schools opened September 11 with the following registration figures noted. Grade one, taught by Miss Susan Sikes, had 15 the first day; second grade, with Miss Marie Prescott in charge, enrolled 25; the third grade teacher, Mrs. Edith Thompson, 23; Miss Grace Renzema, fourth grade, 15; fifth grade teacher, Miss Mabel Moore, 21; sixth grade teacher. Mrs. Gladys Sloan, 20; Mrs. Mildred Rogers, seventh grade, 20; and 20 pu pils greeted Edward Kipp, eighth grade teacher and high school coach. In the high school 18 fresh men, 15 sophomores, 9 juniors, and 11 seniors have registered. The high school staff consists of Mrs. Mabel Sims, English and geography; Mrs. Josephine Ab- bott, commercial and home eco nomics; Alvin Wheeler, science and mathematics; and Lyle L. Describing "Screaming Mim- is" and "burp" guns and giving interesting material about the battle in Italy as experienced by men of the 91st infantry divi-! sion, Lt. Paul M. Hoyme of the1 division recently wrote to his aunt and uncle, Mi. and Mrs. Robert Rae of 819 Bennett ave nue. Lt. Hoyme was stationed at Camp White when the 91st division trained there. "I've been over here for some time now seems much longer. Our regiment went into action early in June. We participated in the fall of Rome went through the city early the next morning. We have been going ever since and were the first to reach the Arno river. "We must have done a pretty good Job all the way. Our bat talion was picked by the division commander to be inspected by some of the higher-uppers, name-1 ly: Under-secretary of War Pat-j terson, Lt. Gen. Mark Clark, Lt. ucn. jevei, i-ii. ucn. uuuunv, ville, Maj. Gen. Livesay, Maj. Gen. Keyes, Ma. Gen. Hayes, Brig. Gen. Williamson, a couple more brigadiers, etc. Plenty of 'brass,' and were we surprised! We felt quite honored. We were back resting at the time but still within artillery range. "I can truthfully say 'war is hell'. I have learned what it is to be truly thirsty, hungry and tired. And I'm mot ashamed to say down-right scared at times. We all are. Don't let anyone tell you different. I have never said so many prayers in all my life and plenty fast at times, too. "I'll never forget the first time the Jerries had their 88 s zeroed in on my platoon, in an open wheatfield. I didn't shake, that time, 'til lt was over. I never was more proud of a bunch of men. They dropped 18 rounds in the middle of the' platoon area In about three min utes. But they kept so well dis persed and moving that when the shells let up not a man was touched. We have all had plenty of close ones and know very well someone up above must have been near. "I know what the scream of a Jerry 170, 155 and 88 is. The latter is very accurate and comes in very fast. One day I had their mortar shells exploding all around me, as I dashed for cov er. (World's fastest human, that time!) They give no warning sound just the explosion. Its easy to recall the first time I heard a "Screaming Mimi" a six-barrel rocket gun it was late at night when all at once the whole sky was lighted up. accompanied by the most terrify ing sound. I hit the ground and fast, but the shells sailed on over and lit harmlessly behind us. We finally figured out what it was. "I have also had those nasty little lead slugs from Jerry rifles, machine guns and machine-pistols whistling all around. The latter is very fast three slugs on the way out through the bar rel at one time. We call it a 'burp' gun looks like some thing out of Buck Rogers. "But everything we have Is betler, and more of it. I don't know how they stand our ar tillery. We have so much of it, and how our men love to fire. I have directed artillery fire a couple of times myself. And are they ever accurate. I guess the Jerries know that fetter than we, and sav so.
