September 3, 1944 COL BIDDLE WINS The many friends of Colonel William Shepard Biddlc will be pleased to learn he has been decorated with the coveted "sil ver slier" for special "tfallantry In action" in the battle of France. For his nble service training of mechanized troops in England before the invasion, he was awarded the "bronze star." Colonel Biddle Is the son of Mrs. Margaret Biddle of Port land and Chiloquin, Ore., who Is also a frequent visitor to Medford and spent the past win ter here at her sister's home. He is a graduate of West Point in the class of '23, and has been in the army ever since gradu ation, having held important military posts at the Canal Zone and also in England. Col. Biddle is in command of a mechanical cavalry unit, which has played a leading part in the record breaking allied offensive in France, CITE EARL Sergeant Earl A. Jones of the U. S. Army infantry has been awarded a Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement in action according to word received by his wife who lives at 519 S. Holly St., Medford. Jones enlist ed in the paratroopers three years ago, and is at present, in England after combat duty on the European continent. At the time Jones received the award, lie was serving in Italy with the rank of corporal. The. citation, signed by Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark, comman der of the American Fifth army, states that the award is made "for heroic achievement in ac tion on Jan. 30, 1944 near CIs- tcrna dl Llttoria, Italy. During an approach march, Jones ac companied a detachment of men sent forward of his company j across flat and open terrain. The Intensity of enemy fire delayed ' the party's advance, causing them to take cover frequently. I Jones, however, continued for-1 ward to the assistance of two comrades who were already en gaged In close combat with a group ot Germans. Ho shot and killed one German and then as sisted in rounding up prisoners nnd driving tho enemy from his positions. Jones' courageous ac tions reflect credit upon himself and tho armed forces." Arnold for his ingenuity, initiative, in terest and loyalty in designing a mechanism which has proven most useful in the work of his carrier nircraft service unit, U. S. Navy, was received last week by W. E. Wakefield, aviation machinist's mate first class of the machine shop, according to word received by his wife, who lives on Route 4, Box 11, Wake field, who was formerly man- ager of Hanson's Hardware An account of the eommenda-r tion, printed in Wakefield's unit paper, stated that in addi tlon, as a token of appreciation Wakefield was awarded a war bond. In his letter, Commander Arnold expressed his apprecia tion for Wakefield's loyalty and contribution, as evidenced by the device designed. Wakefield constructed a pre oiler of original design which is used by the carrier aircraft serv ice unit in pre-oiling airplanes. No effective device for this work had been theretofore perfected, the article states, and descrip tion and plans of the pre-oilcr were forwarded to the Bureau of Aeronautics. MM IS WOUNDED AGAIN , F'rst """ ot Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McGinty of 524 N. Riverside Ave. has been wounded in action for the second time, according to word received by his parents. A mem ber of a special service force of United States-Canadian Com mandos, McGinty was wounded in action in France Aug. 15 He was previously wounded in the Casino mountains of Italy last Dec. 3, and received the Purple Heart medal at that time.
