More than 1100 American heavy bombers attacked numerous tar gets In northern Germany today. the U. S. second tactical air force announced, as Berlin radio re ported that another formation from Italy was ranKlnrf over Aus tria on the second consecutive day of the renewed allied aerial offensive. ; While the Italy-based raid was not Immediately confirmed by allied sources, the second tactical air force reported that the great fleet of Flying Fortresses and Liberators had attacked a "va riety of important targets" in the northern region of the reich. The bombers were accompanied by strong forces of Lightning, Thunderbolt, and Mustang fight er planes. The targets In northern Ger many Included the flying bomb and rocket experimental station at Peenemunde; a bomber as sembly plant and bomber com ponent parts plant at Wismar; another bomber components plant at Luebeck; a bomber as sembly plant at Rostock; a syn thetic oil plant at Politz; Ger man air force stations at Ank lam, Schwerin, and Neubranden burg west of Stettin, and a Ger man air force research center at Rechlin. Returning crewmen reported generally good results. EAGLES 10 HOLD PARTY Medford Aerie No. 2083, F. O, E. and auxiliary, will celebrate the 18th anniversary of the or ders establishment here with a special Initiation, program, din ner and dance Sunday, August 27. The celebration will also honor charter members of the Medford aerie. Officers announced today that candidates for initiation should be at the Eagles hall at 1 p. m. The ceremony starts at 2 p. m. Women of the ncrie will serve dinner at 6 o'clock and at 8 o'clock a movie will be shown and a musical program given. The festivities will conclude with a dance. Shannon O. To morrow the New York stock ex change will be closed for the sec ond of its three summer Satur day recesses. Price changes generally were fractional, with losses predomi nating. Chrysler and General Motors gave up early gains and held unchanged. Republic Steel and U. S. Steel eased, but Youngstown Sheet and Tube added a fraction. Bethlehem failed to appear on the tape. Heinsen United Press Staff Correspondent South Bend, Ind. (U.R) The Normandy beachhead was the proving ground for several surprise weapons which the army had built secretly and used for the first time against the enemy in France. The "weasel," in many ways a jeep with web feef,' was one of the surprises regarding which the war de parment has just lifted the secrecy restrictions. There are other secret weapons and vehicles abou t which nothing is being said for the time being, despite the fact they have been in successful operation since invasion began. Here at its birthplace, I rode a weasel which skims the ground just like its namesake, SEABEAS ADAPT JAPANESE GEAR TO 01 Washington (U.R) The versa tile Scabees continue to live up to their reputation for making useful gear out of discarded equipment. Lt. Comdr. Anthony W. Van Leer, Civil Engineer Corps, of Chevy Chase, Md., recently re ported on how the Seabees have rebuilt and remodelled equip ment captured at Japanese bases In the Gilbert and Marsh all islands to meet their own re quirements. "At nearly every base, Jap anese buildings, vehicles, tools or materials have been used ad vantageously," Van Leer said. He told of one Seabee battal ion, commanded by Comdr. Free mont G. Elliot, 69 Aberdeen PI., Clayton, Mo., that repaired Jap anese trucks and motorcycles salvaged at Tarawa and took them along with their regular gear when ihey moved to Kwa jalein. In another Instance, a battal ion led by Comdr. Frank B. Cres sey, of 5335 East Broadway, Long Beach, Calif., rebuilt a Japanese lathe, drill press and a power hacksaw when it moved Into Roimamur. They are using the machines so successfully that they probably will take them along when they move to a new base. Also at Tarawa, Van Leer re ported, a Seabee maintenance unit commanded by Lt. Clar ence D. Arrasmith, of 4403 54th St. SW, Seattle, Wash., re habilitated a Japanese generator to furnish the main block ot power on the island. or strikes swiftly and stealthily across snow, sand, swamp land, deep mud. It can go anywhere a Jeep can go, and many places a Jeep would fear to tread. Known officially as the cargo' carrier M-29, the weasel is a lightweight low-slung, versatile common carrier. It can carry four men, a ton of ammunition, water and food or can race in and out of action carrying wounded on stretchers. When the Japanese broke into the Aleutians, the war depart ment discovered the need of a pounds pressure per square inch. In contrast G.I. Joe when carry ing the full load of an infantry man exerts ground pressure of 8 pounds per square inch. Thus a weasel can cross dry snow or sand wRere a foot soldier would sink in to his knees. In form, it is a welded, water proof body on 32 bogie wheels. It is not bullet-proof but depends upon its camouflage, its speed and mobility for its safety. It's low ground pressure is due to its steel-and-rubber wide treads. It is powered by a Studebaker 6-cylinrier automobile motor with six forward speeds. It is motor vehicle that could travel guided, like a ta.ik, with two fast over snow and Ice.
