HOW'S YOU Entire families sometimes show this tendency to an early arteriosclerosis, wrote the la- mous Dr. Os ier, some fif ty - odd years ago, a tenden cy which can no t be ex plained in any other way than that in the make - up of the ma chine bad ma terial was used for the Dr Brady tubing. I suspect that Dr. Osier felt a litle uneasy about that bald as sertion himself, for he added this significant remark: More commonly the arterio-sclerosis results from the bad use of good vessels. Arterio - sclerosis, lest any squeamish person or poorly ed ucated college graduate be alarmed about it, is a gradual loss of the elasticity or resili ence of the arteries from re placement of the cells of the muscle coats with inelastic fib rous tissue which makes the vessel walls harder and less re silient hardening of the ar teries an accompaniment of old age which everybody who lives long enough must have sooner or later. It is not to be confused with high blood pres sure, real or imaginary, and it nothing to do with the thin ness or thickness of the blood nor with the amount of blood, that is, whether the individual is "full-blooded" (plethoric) or anemic or pallid. By the "bad use of good ves sels" Dr. Osier meant overeat ing, indulgence in alcohol, over work of the muscles and the stress and strain of modern life, high-pressure life. It is clear enough what the first two mean. But just what Osier had in mind when he men tioned over-work of the mus cles and the stress and strain of high-pressure life he did not explain . So far as I can learn there Is no good evidence that individ uals who do the hardest kind of OLD TRUCK TIRES Camp White. The army salv age program at Camp White is aiding locally to alleviate the critical shortage of truck tires by the return to civilian chan nels of quantities of tire casinpG, which, although unsuitable for further army use, are fit for re building and civilian use. Within the past thirty-day period 540 truck tires and 83 automobile tires have been sold to local OPA approved dealers for re building and distribution. Segre gation of these repairable cas- ings from scrap rubber has made additional tires available and hr.s also returned more than S2.500 to the U. S. Treasury Tire sales are not made by the army direct to the consumer Accumulation of salvage, scrap and waste material are periodically offered for sale on a competitive bid basis by the Purchase and Contract Branch at Camp White. The accumula tions include scrap metal, un serviceable clothing, used pro duce containers, waste paper, etc. Articles of clothing and equipment are sold only after being classified as unserviceable for army use. Sales do not Include land, buildings, or fixtures, such as furnaces, shop equipment, re frigerators, furniture, etc. A different class of salable property consists of items which have become obsolete for army purposes, or have been declared surplus to War Department re quirements, but which are still in serviceable condition. Dispo sal of this class of property, in cluding motor vehicles, is made by the Treasury Department, and persons interested in sub mitting bids on item of this class may obtain circular listings by addressing requests to U. After all, hardening of the arteries should occasion no more concern or worry than loss of teeth, gray hair, wrin kled skin, dulling of vision, de cline in general elasticity and activity and the numerous other changes that must come with the years.
