POSTAL CARDS ARE Some one signing "Postcard Jennie" asks whether Buerger's disease ends in gangrene, says a Jricnd ha3 it and she suf fers much pain, burning and numbness in both feet and a sks whether I can explain about Buerger's d 1 -scase. I talked a bout it here re- rently and had Dr Bradt a series of ar ticles about It here a few months ago. There Is a chapter about it in booklet CVD for copy send ten cents and a stamped enve lope bearing your address. Postal cards seldom get to my desk but "Postcard Jennie" got through for one good reason she refers to a 'woman with Buerger's disease. Now the medical name for Buerger's disease Is, I regret to say, thrombo-angiltis obliterans However, we're not Inclined to be unreasonable about such mat ters in the profession, as witness the recent dropping of one of the 1's from angiitis, a concession which, I think, shows that medi cine is a liberal art. In a talk to women about smoking I said here "if a lady cares to chew she Is Just as well justified In taking a chew as a gentleman Is, if a gentleman ever does tobacco does no more harm to a woman than it docs to I man. But there is no argument about the Injurious effects of tobacco in youth" and youth, s I see it, is the growing, de veloping period of life from the age of 10 years to the age of 23 years. Mind you, I do'ous resort in France when they not mean to imply that smoking is the only cause of Buerger's disease, for there are authentic cases on record of Buerger s dl sease progressing to gangrene and amputation of foot or leg, In persons who have never smok ed. But I do believe excessive Indulgence, especially in youth is the chief factor in the causa tion of the disease in most cases. I tell what I can of the treat ment of Buerger's disease In the CVD booklet mentioned above. After all "Postcard Jennie's" message is hardly worth this no tice. It tells me nothing interest ing, for instance, whether the victim of Buerger's disease smokes and if so how long has been a victim of the habit and did anybody ever admire or like her any better for it? Press (Distributed by United Press) St. Tropez, France, Aug 16 (U.R) Mistakes will happen with amphibious landings so Ameri can paratroopers took this fam- should have been somewhere far Inland. I found a group of tough, happy youngsters here this morning and since they were sat isfied and so was the high com mand, there were no complaints. It was cloudy night before last and navigators went by the so called precision Instruments. At a given time they were supposed to be over the target and they sent the paratroopers out. Three planes of them landed on a peninsula and they realized Im mediately something was wrong. The paratroopers, however, had to be resourceful. Germans attacked with small arms fire as they came down and killed several. Other Nazis blew up a little port where fashionable yachts used to anchor. So the paratroopers pitched In and took St. Tropez. Residents ol the town highly praised the exactitude of Ameri can bombing and shelling. "They didn't even break a window," said the proprietor of the Hotel De Paris as he hung out an American flag which he had kept hidden in the rafters. "W hen the Germans re quisitioned the hotel, they put us an out. ne said. "When the American s requisitioned the hotel they let us stay and they give the children chocolate. It Is most different." Paratroopers said French pa triots in the town helped them fight the Germans and showed them where the Germans were caring for their wounded. ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING BRINGS DEATH OF FIVE Reading. Pa., Aug. 18 U.R) Clyde G. Portner, 29, a hosiery mill knitter, his housekeeper and three children were found shot to death today in the Port ner home at West Wyomissing and police believe Portner killed himself and the children after accidentally wounding the house keeper. The victims of Portner's gun were Mrs. Marguerite McDer molt, about 30, wife of Corp. Hubert McDermott, Camp Wil liam C. Held, New Mexico; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth, 17 months old, and Portner's two children, Terrance, 4, and Rob ert, 9. The French and Indian War in America was In 1754-63.
