.FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, August 13, 1844 Society Farewell Parties Honor Holloways Before Departure Many social affairs are being Riven In Medford for Mr. and Mrs. William A. Holloway, Sr. and their daughters. Miss Mary Holloway and Mrs. William C, Broumley, who leave next Sun day to make their home in fnoc- nix, Ariz. The Holloways have resided here many years and have a host ol friends who re gret their departure from the valley. Their Phoenix address will be 2137 East Van Buren street. Mrs. Holloway has been ac. tlve in many groups of the city and much of the entertaining centers in the membership of these organizations. Tomorrow Past Matrons of Reames Chapter No. 66, O.E.S., will be hostesses at a tea with Mrs. Holloway as honored guest. The tea is to be at the home of Mrs. E. M. Wil son, 340 South Riverside avenue from two until four oclocK Mrs. Wilson is president of the croup. Mrs. R. G. Fowler and Mrs. J. K. Woodford are in charge of arrangements and Mrs. Myrna Frink will provide a musical program. Last night Chapter B.E., P.E. O. entertained for Mrs. Hollo way, the affair being a dessert cupper at the home of Mrs. Geo. Canode, 1716 Crown avenue at 7:30 o'clock. The guest of honor was presented with a gift from the members. Tonight a group of close friends of the Holloways arc gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cole Holmes for an outdoor supper party as a fare well to the couple. About 12 couples are expected to attend. Members of Just Folks Circle of the Methodist church enter tained for Mrs. Holloway last Thursday afternoon, the affair being at the home of Mrs. Harry Olson, 40 Berkeley Way. Mrs. Holloway has been a member of this group for some 20 years and everal friends who have also been members during this per iod were present. Mrs. H. F. Nordwlck read a history of the circle and Mrs. Holloway was presented with a gift. The Holloways' son, Lt. (is) William A. Holloway and his wife are expected tomorrow from North Island Naval baso, San Dlcgo, to spend the week The family will be at 657 South Holly street for their last week in Medford. Name Committees For Lodge Work Lottie Howard, Telitha Picket and Marie Hansen were named to the good-of-the-ordcr commit tee by Maud Daugherty, noble grand, at the meeting of Olive Rcbckah lodge held Monday night. Plans were made for initi ation, to be held soon and the treasurer reported purchase of another war bond. Entertainment committee for the August 21 meeting will be Lottie Cave, Marian Mellon, Grace Pankcy, while the re freshment committee will be Ella Rogers, Julia Gregory, Lone Bergman, Florence Klatt and Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards. 4 Mrs. Boswell Returns Alter Vliit Here Mrs. Stella Hoswcll left Med ford Thursday to return to her home at Beaverton after spend ing two weeks here as a guest of Mrs. Richard Schuler, 011 West Tenth street. Is Enlivened By Outdoor Parties The county's social life has centered largely around outdoor parties during the early days of August, the warm weather and moonlit nights making picnics and garden suppers especially enjoyable. Other affairs are be ing given for visitors and for residents leaving the city. Sundays are marked with the large picnics of Granges and such groups as the various state associations, with former resi dents of Nebraska and Montana holding their annual picnic meetings today in Ashland. Last week members of the Past Noble Grands club entertained sister Rebekahs at a garden party at the home of Mrs. W. H. Dyer, Myrtle street, and this coming week Mistletoe Camp of the Royal Neighbors will picnic Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Miller on Orchard Home Drive. Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hol loway and daughters are the in centlve for a number of social gatherings, since they are leav ing next Sunday lo reside in Phoenix, Ariz. Many friends and groups are planning fare well parties before their de parture. Guilberts Return North Thursday Dean and Mrs. Charles M. Guilbert of Portland, with their children, Tommy and Beth, left the valley Thursday after spend ing a week in Ashland and Med ford. Dean Guilbert was former ly vicar of Trinity Episcopal church in Ashland and is now dean of the Portland cathedral. The Guilberts were the source of much entertaining, both In Ashland and in this city. They were guests here of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Hcdberg, who in vited the Guilberts and the Rev. and Mrs. George R. Turncy, Medford, for dinner at their home, 1208 East Main street. Also entertaining the Guilberts for dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Leeuer who Invited the visitors to their home, Lee Acres In the country. The Hcdbcrgs, LeeVers and Ernest Wallins of Medford were guests at a large tea given In Ashland by Mrs. Rose Roblnett and Miss Victoria Tavener for Dean and Mrs. Guilbert. Juveniles Hold, August Meeting Leah Peabody and Patty Mc Allister were initiated into the Degree of Honor Juvenile club at the meeting held Tuesday afternoon at the K. of P. hall. Joan Kidwell presided. During the afternoon Joan Kidwell and Leah Peabody danced the sailors hornpipe and Patty McAllister sang. Prizes were awarded to Patty McAllis ter and Virginia Lee Carey. Refreshments were served, with Beverly Mero and Hertha Miller assisting Mrs. Ida M. Wil son, director of the club. Joan Marilyn Vaughn was a Juvenile guest and Past President Mary While was guest assistant. Next meeting of the club will be Sept. 12. Medford Woman Leaves Mrs. Helen Dixon of Medford left Tuesday evening for Yaki ma, Wash., where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. William Hines and her grandchildren, Stephen, Mary and the recently arrived Cynthia Jane. Ottmer Is Honored Guest At Bridge Parties Two bridge parties were given last week for Mrs. Walter Ottmer of West Bend, Wise, who is In Medford spending several weeks with her daughter, Mrs W. Alex Kuehlthau, 55 North Orange street. Mrs. Ray E. Wright entertain ed at a small bridge party Thursday night at her home, 60 North Orange street, for Mrs. Ottmer. The guest of honor re ceived the prize for high score at bridge, Mrs. Kuehlthau held sec ond honors and Mrs. Roland Smith received the traveling prize. Friday afternoon Mrs. John McCabe entertained for the vis. itor, having a group of friends for dessert and bridge at her home on Valley View Drive Mrs. Frank Humphrey was giv- en the prize for high bridge score, Mrs. Robert M. Mikscho for second honors and Mrs. Ott mcr was presented with a guest prize. Other affairs are being plan- ned for Mrs. Ottmer this coming week. Nephew To Marry Granddaughter Of Former President Mrs. J. O. Yeiser. Flndley Apartments, has received news of the approaching marriage of her nephew, Alexander McCor- mick Sturm, of Westport, Conn, the bride-elect being Miss Paul Ina Loneworth, daughter of Mrs. Nicholas Longworth and granddaughter of the late Presi dent Theodore Roosevelt. The wedding is to be in the late sum mer and will take place at Mag nolia, Mass. Mr. Sturm Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Sturm and Mrs. Yeiser is a sister of Mr. Sturm, senior. The Sturms arc well known on the east coast, the father being an author, sculptor and Dlavwright and the son also having had two books published. Mrs. Yeiser, who came nere from Omaha, Neb., is home serv ice case worker for the Jackson Countv Red Cross chapter. Her son, Andy, student at Massachu setts Institute of Technology, Boston, is here for the summer. ; Ladies Auxiliary Inaugurates Drive The regular business meeting of the Ladies' Auxiliary to Cra ter Lake Post No. 1833, Veter ans of Foreign Wars, scheduled for the armory next Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock, will be fol lowed by a social hour and the serving of refreshments. Mrs. Margaret Erbs, senior vice-president and membership chairman for this year, has in augurated a membership drive and the auxiliary has been dlvid- ed into two opposing teams with Mrs. Frances Zundell and Mrs Mabel White as captains. At the conclusion of the drive, the win- ning side and its captain will be feted by the losers. Mothers, wives, sisters or daughters of soldiers, sailors or marines who have seen foreign service are eligible for membership in the auxiliary. Prospective members are asked to contact either of the above named captains for further information. The refreshment committee for next week's meeting is head ed by Mrs. Erbs. Illustrious Potontate Will Attend Picnic E. L, Lenox, illustrious po tentate of Hill all Temple of the Shrine, will go to Grants Pass today to attend the annual pic nic of the Bill Day Shrine club there. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Lenox. Hansen. Mrs. Dickinson is the niece of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Childers and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Childers of Medford, and the corporal's parents are Mr. and Mrs. D. Mrs. Bebb Guest Of Calif ornians Royal E. Bebb and son Ward have returned from an enjoy able 10-day stay in San Fran cisco. Mrs. Bebb accompanied them and remained a week in the bay ity, continunig on south later to Arcadia, the home of Mrs. O. B. Kee. She will di vide her time between there Los Angeles and Santa Monica. While in San Francisco the Bcbbs were week-end guests of the Rev. and Mrs. Herald Gard ner at the rectory of St. Luke's Episcopal church where the Rev. Gardner occupied . the pulpit uring July. He is dean of St. Mark's Cathedral, Salt Lake City, and formerly was rector of St. Mark's church here. Party Is Surprise For Barbara Gunn Barbara Gunn was honor guest at a surprise party given August 2 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Gunn, Ross Lane, the affair cele brating her tenth birthday. Games were played, after the honor guest had opened her birthday gifts, and refreshments were served. The tables were decorated in red, white and blue and sweelpeas were used as cen terpieces. The guest of honor cut her birthday cake, making the ten traditional wishes. Present were Betty C'.in-k, Betty Wright, Nancy and Jean Cox, Shirley and Carol Boswell. June Danby, Lelia Cook, Ailene Hopkins, Marian Mitchell, Mor ris Lee and Jimmie Gunn and the honored guest. Assisting Mrs. Gunn were Mrs. Idabellc Colter and Miss Ailene Hopkins. Guests Entertained At G. C. Wimer Home Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Wimer, 410 Ivy street, this last week were Sec ond Lt. and Mrs. Alvin L. Wim er, .vlrs. D. C. Wimer and Miss Jamie Brueggur of Eugene, Ore. Lt. and Mrs. Wimer arrived from Arizona, where the officer graduated August 4 as a bomber pilot, and will be here until the middle of this week, leaving then for Albuquerque, N. M. Mrs. D. C. Wimer, whose hus banc is an ensign on a navy car rier, arrived here from Chula Vista, Calif., to spend some time with her husband's parents. Miss Bruegger Is a school friend of both Mrs. Alvin and Mrs. D. C. Wimer. Mr. and Mrs. Butler In Modford Frpm South Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Butler of Los Angeles are In Medford to visit relatives and friends. Mrs. Under is the former Mrs. Besnli. Smith of Medford, her wedding to Mr. Butler taking place in the south last week. Mr. Butler is a well known Los Angeles I sportsman. While in the valley the Butlers will also visit Mrs. Butler's mother, Mrs. Mamie Vcnable In Ashland. Miss Brooks enter tained at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Brooks, 335 South Riverside. The evening was spent at cards and the guests presented ot handkerchiefs. Wright and Mrs William A. Holloway entertain ed recently at luncheon and bridge, the affair being at Mrs Wright s home, 60 North Orange street. A profusion of vari-col-ored gladioli were used to deco rate the rooms. Prizes for high scores at bridge went to Mrs. Roland Smith, Mrs. Fred Sweeney and Mrs. Claude Holmes. Twenty five friends were invited for the party. Frank Antinone Is Honor Guest A party Monday evening at the Hobby House, 15 Keene Way Drive, honored Frank Antinone, who has been listed for military service. Those present were Gail Codding, Jane Watson, Jean Antinone, Charleen Nichols, Donald McMahan, Bob Clay- pool, Dorothy Anderson, Ralph Hulse, Wayne Rose, Mary Ber rian, Bill Hedrick, Bill Ross, Jerry Warren, the honored guest and the patron and patron esses, the Rev. Milo C. Ross, Mrs. R. J. Antinone and Mrs. Wendell M. Votaw. The evening was spent with badminton and other active games and concluded with a taffy pull and serving of soft drinks. Guests Depart Monday After Stay In Valley Mr. and Mrs. Wade Palmer and daughter, Margaret, of Eugene, and Mrs. Ethel Laham of Seminole, Okla., were In the valley recently visiting relatives. They were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Daugherty and fam ily of Eagle Point and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Daugherty and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Daugherty and family, Mrs. Fay Harris and Mrs. Johnny Lokia of Medford. Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Laham are sisters of Arthur, Everett and Harry Jaugherty. Mrs. Palmer, her daughter and her son, Lewis, now a cap- lain in the army, formerly lived here. Mr., Palmer is mill owner in Eugene. Tie visitors left August 7 for Smith River, Calif., to visit a sister, Mrs. Eva Faulkner. Birthday Party Honors Mrs. Mirtie Stafford McLcod Mrs. Louise Staf ford was hostess at a dinner party given at her home Friday evening, Aug. 4, honoring her mother. Mrs. Mirtie Stafford on her birthday anniversary. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shepard and son Ronnie, Mr. and Mrs. George Bowers, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stafford and Mr; and Mrs. Edward Stafford. Mr. Shepard, electrician's mate third class, is home on leave. He has been attending the Univer sity of Minnesota, but will now be stationed at Seattle, Wash. Auxiliary Observing Annual Vacation Time Next meeting of the auxiliary to the Sapnish American War Veterans will be held Oct. 4, it was announced today by Auxili ary President Bertha Bonney. Last meeting of the group was held in July and the usual an nual vacation period is now be ing observed. Sojourners' Club To Hold Picnic At McKee Bridge Plans for the annual picnic of the Medford Sojourner's club were made at the meeting Thursday at the Girls' Commun ity club. It will be held next Sunday, August 20 and is for members and husbands. The group is to meet at the Medford city park and from there will go to McKee bridge for the pic nic Arrangements are in charge of Mrs. H. W. Crain. Mrs. Merton Lyster was host ess chairman for the meeting last week, and was assisted by Mrs. F. W. Rehling and Mrs. Crain. Dessert was served from a table arranged with garden flowers. Cards followed, with Mrs. Rehling and Mrs. Leo Mc Corkle winning pinochle prizes and Mrs. W. Alex Kuehlthau, Mrs. B. C. Taylor and Mrs. A. A. Welch winning bridge prizes. Mrs. Howard Swanson was also presented a prize. Mrs. Taylor, formerly of Eu gene, is a prospective member and Mrs. Leona Baxter and Mrs. Walter E. Ottmer were guests. Forest Official Speaks For Union A. D. McRcynolds of the State Forest Patrol spoke on fire pre vention and forest protection at the meeting of the Medford W.C. T.U. held Thursday afternoon In the Salvation 'Army hall. Mr. McReynolds stated that Oregon has one-fourth of the standing timber in the United States and praised the work of the look outs posted for the protection of the forests. He spoke of the need of a forestry course in our schools. Mrs. Wiliard G. Shearburn gave a devotional message and nominating committee was appointed by the president. Miss Hurd Leaving After Vacation Hera Miss Ann Hurd is returning to Portland this evening after spending a vacation with her mother, Mrs. E. H. Hurd, at 1136 West Tenth street. Miss Hurd is a member of the professional staff of the Council of Social Agencies-of Portland and Mult nomah county. Miss Hurd spent a part of her vacation with her brother, Joubert Hurd, and fam ily at Piedmont, Calif. Valley Residents Make Trip To Crescent City Mrs. R. D. Coffin and baby son of 840 Palm street, Mrs. Grace E. Reed of 328 Edwards street, and Mrs. William G. Reed of Ashland spent two days this week at Crescent City, Cal. Leaving Tuesday morning, they returned from the vacation trip Thursday. Mrs. Lamb Dinner Guest In Ashland on Thursday Mrs. W. R. Lamb of Palm street, Medford, was a dinner guest Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Ivan Hatfield of Ashland. Zontians To Hear Meeting Reports Reports of the annual conven tion of Zonta International, held in Chicago,, will be given by Mrs. Effie Kurtz at a meeting i scheduled for Monday night. Mrs. Kurtz remained in Chi-' cago following the close of the convention and enrolled in spe cial music courses. She was re- appointed chairman of the music committee of Zonta Internation al, having served as chairman this past year. Members of the camp and their families have been invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Miller, Orchard Home Drive, for the outdoor party, which is sched uled for 6:30 oclock. The com mittee in charge asks that the members bring service for their families and one covered dish for the menu. Three Are Visitors At Herb Crain Home Miss Leone Baxter and Mrs. J. Preston Bradford of Santa Ana, Calif., are guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herb. Crain, 1020 W. 11th St. The visi tors plan to spend a week with friends in the valley. Mrs. Crain's mother, Mrs. E.
